Suicide Prevention Toolkit & Resources for Industry

Toolkit for Industry

NSSF’s “Have a Brave Conversation” toolkit is for firearm retailers, shooting ranges and others to train staff and educate customers about preventing suicide. The toolkit and replenishment of its contents are free. A separate toolkit developed the VA, NSSF and AFSP is a guide to building a community prevention initiative.

Helping a person get through a difficult period in life does not compromise their right to own a firearm. Many who intermittently struggle have successfully dealt with their challenges and go on to enjoy owning firearms, target shooting and hunting throughout their lives.

NSSF’s resources cover many areas but three messages stand out:

  • Suicide is preventable.
  • Call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number if you or someone you’re concerned about is struggling.
  • Understand that the final decision to take one’s life is often made impulsively, and the time between the decision and the act is typically less than 10 minutes. Securely storing firearms and other lethal means to delay or prevent access creates “time and space” — a pause that can save a life.

The more you know about suicide prevention, the more confident you’ll be to act when someone needs your help. NSSF’s resources make you aware of warning signs, how to have that “brave conversation” with someone who’s struggling and the importance of delaying/preventing access to firearms and other means when someone is at risk.
