Sportsmen’s Act Amendment Not Included in Farm Bill
By a 64-35 vote, the Senate last week passed the massive Farm Bill (S. 3240), which sets national agricultural, nutrition, conservation and forestry policy. Unfortunately, the bill did not include the Sportsmen’s Act of 2012 as an amendment.
According to a story in the Missoulian, the Sportsmen’s Act amendment was among nearly 300 proposed amendments to the Farm Bill, the final version of which contained 70 amendments.
NSSF thanks everyone who called their senators and urged them to support the Sportsmen’s Act amendment, a package of pro-sportsman’s bills that included the Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Protection Act (S. 838), which would clarify that ammunition is excluded from regulation by the Environmental Protection Agency under the Toxic Substances Control Act and help prevent a ban on traditional ammunition made with lead components. Such a ban, which is being advocated by anti-hunting groups led by the Center for Biological Diversity, would devastate hunting and shooting-sports participation and conservation funding and drive tens of thousands of industry jobs offshore.
NSSF is committed to continue working with Senators Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and John Thune (R-S.D.), who introduced the Sportsmen’s Act of 2012, and other co-sponsors to advance pro-sportsmen’s legislation in the 112th Congress. Senators Tester and Thune are the senate co-chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus.
