California: Oppose SB1221

Senator Ted Lieu (District 28) and Senator Darrell Steinberg (District 6) introduced Senate Bill 1221 Mammals: use of dogs to pursue bears and bobcats, sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States. SB1221 would expressly prohibit the use of dogs in hunting to pursue any bear or bobcat. The bill has recently passed on the Senate Floor and will be heard in the Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee on June 26, 2012.

We encourage you to take action on this issue now in order to protect the future of hunting. The regulation of the use of dogs for hunting bears and bobcats, or other species, should be the responsibility of the State Fish and Game Commission. Decisions on the use of dogs for hunting should be made based on science and the facts, not on political or emotional considerations.

While SB 1221 would not prohibit the use of dogs in bird hunting, the bill’s provisions would still be threatening to the future of hunting and its traditions. This legislation does not only pertain to hounding–the anti-hunting community will not stop here, as the Humane Society stated that the use of hounds in hunting already prompted the outlaw of mountain lion hunting in California in 1990.

Speak out against this legislation by contacting members of the Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee, especially if you live in any one of their districts. Tell him/her that you are opposed to SB 1221.
