First Shots
Can I charge a fee for the class?
Absolutely! We encourage you to charge a reservation fee — suggested amount: $25 and not more than $75 (fees greater than $50 should include additional benefits for participants such as a rebate on a post First Shots experience or product your business offers). This helps offset the cost of offering the event, and results in fewer cancellations/no-shows.
How do I get started?
To hold First Shots events, you must be a member of the NSSF. If you’re not, find out more about NSSF membership. If you are already an NSSF member range, submit your events using the First Shots Event form.
What qualifications do my instructors have to have?
Lead instructors should be certified through a recognized entity (i.e.; NRA, IPSC, NSCA, USCCA, etc.).
What will NSSF provide me?
For each First Shots event, you’ll receive a First Shots Host Kit with ammunition, targets, eye/ear protection and classroom resources. View all host range resources.
Why should I do a First Shots event instead of developing a new shooter class on my own?
NSSF encourages you to take full advantage of your benefit as an NSSF member, and First Shots is one example. You will receive course curriculum, financial support, and we’ll even reward every class participant with a $25 coupon to spend at your range. Use this worksheet to see if First Shots makes sense for you.
Will these first-time shooters come back to my range?
According to NSSF research and the experiences of other First Shots ranges, you should expect up to 70% will return. What could this look like for your range?
