Gear Up for S.A.F.E. Hunting

When folks ask me what my favorite season is, my answer isn’t the typical summer or fall — it’s hunting season! It was a tradition in my family for years, and for us, the only thing more fun than the hunt was the memories we shared afterwards. Sept. 28 marks National Hunting and Fishing Day, and at the opening of every new season, I always remind folks that the hunt’s not over until you’re S.A.F.E and firearms are unloaded and securely stored.

“S.A.F.E.” is an acronym I like to use to remind gun owners to Secure your firearms when not in use; Be Aware of those around you who should not have unauthorized access to guns; Focus on your responsibility as a firearm owner and Educate yourself and others about safe firearm handling and storage.

Hunting isn’t something that my family alone has shared; there are over 14 million paid hunting license holders in the U.S. Being such a large and active community, sportsmen and hunters are some of the best ambassadors for responsible firearm ownership and safety. Just like hunting is passed down from family members to the next generation, we encourage all gun owners to incorporate safety education as part of their annual tradition. It’s one of the most valuable and important lesson you can teach those you care about.

Before you go on your next hunt, discuss these tips with your family to ensure you have a memorable and safe experience. These tips include:

√  Notifying others where you’re going hunting and when you’ll return

√  Carrying appropriate safety equipment

√  Reviewing proper firearm handling and storage safety protocols
