Gov. Newsom Pulls Trigger on Striker-Fired Handgun Ban in California
In what shouldn’t surprise anyone, California Gov. Gavin Newsom used his pen to sign Assembly Bill 1127, which gun control activists deemed the “Glock Ban”. Gov. Newsom has never seen a gun control proposal he didn’t love. AB 1127 bans among the most commonly owned type of handgun available to law-abiding Californians, including GLOCK Gen3 pistols currently on California’s approved handgun roster.
Another Gun Control Bill to “Do Something” That Does Nothing
Following the bill signing, the bill’s sponsor Democratic state Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel called it “a win for public safety” to “help put an end to gun violence.”
“As parents and lawmakers, we refuse to stand idly by while our schools and communities are being threatened by illegal machine guns. This commonsense legislation will ensure that the gun industry is held accountable and that we are doing everything possible to protect our communities from mass shootings,” the lawmaker said in a statement.
But Assemblyman Gabriel said the quiet part out loud. Criminals are obtaining illegal “machinegun conversion devices” (MCDs) and illegally altering semiautomatic pistols into illegal machineguns that are then used by gang members to commit violent crime. His solution is not to attack the criminals but to ban commonly owned pistols. Similarly, states like Maryland, New Jersey, Minnesota and cities like Chicago and Seattle try to blame Glock for the actions of these criminals.
California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA) Legislative Director Rick Travis noted the hypocrisy.
“In the name of public safety [Assemblymember] Gabriel seeks to ban the very firearm that has saved thousands of lives by seeking to ban something that is already a felony in the status quo,” he told media. “Don’t be fooled, he is seeking to ban one firearm at a time to dismantle our constitutional rights.”
Predictably, Gov. Newsom’s actions were praised by Everytown for Gun Safety, Moms Demand Action, and other gun control groups more interested in “doing something” for the sake of doing something, not in focusing on the real problem.
“We applaud Governor Newsom and state lawmakers for putting California at the forefront of the fight against DIY machine guns, which are just as scary as they sound,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “It speaks volumes about the gun industry’s fixation on profits that only a new law can force it to take the most basic steps to prevent mass carnage.”
Feinblatt, those who pay attention will recall, attempted to use the taxpayer-funded White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention in the Biden administration to strongarm GLOCK into altering their proven, safe and reliable handguns simply because unrelated criminals break the law. When GLOCK did not succumb to White House pressure, Everytown filed suit against GLOCK on behalf of crime-ridden Chicago.
Never mind that GLOCK handguns are used by tens of thousands of law enforcement officers each and every day to protect peaceful and law-abiding Americans. Or that millions of those law-abiding Americans own and use GLOCK and similar striker-fired handguns for lawful purposes every day without causing any injury or harm.
Actions Speak Louder Than Words
With more than 1 million GLOCKs are already in circulation in California alone, and even former Vice President and California Attorney General Kamala Harris claiming to own one, Gov. Newsom, who is earnestly working to secure support from the Democratic party activist base ahead of a potential 2028 presidential bid, didn’t just pick a fight with the star quarterback, he picked a fight with the entire school.
Although Gov. Newsom described himself as “not anti-gun at all” and “deeply respectful of the Second Amendment” to Shawn Ryan on his podcast, he clearly respects the ignorance of gun control more. AB 1127 was crafted to stop the misuse of MCDs or auto sears, which are already illegal, and is a blatant contradiction to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) which designated gun ownership as an individual right.
By signing this bill into law, Gov. Newsom isn’t going to curb the criminal misuse of (already) illegal devices in the least. Instead, he’s going to punish law-abiding citizens and the lawful and highly regulated firearm industry.
