N.J. Legislators Want to Swap Smart Gun Mandates

Legislators in New Jersey seem ready to replace one failed state mandate with another one. State Sen. Loretta Weinberg, sponsor of the original New Jersey “Smart Gun” mandate law, has introduced legislation to repeal the original mandate and instead force firearms retailers to carry at least one model of an authorized-user technology equipped firearm in their inventory.

S.3249 is scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee Monday, Nov. 16, at 10:30 a.m. in State House Annex, Committee Room 10, Trenton. NSSF is urging all New Jersey retailers and gun owners to express your opposition to this attempt to create an artificial market. Attend the hearing or contact your senator by phone or email. Find your State Senator.

Contrary to false claims made by some anti-gun groups, the firearms industry is not opposed to the development of this technology. Our industry is opposed to legislation that would either mandate the use of this technology as a one-size-fits-all solution or that would require it to be placed in stores by state law as if that would create the demand.

Please contact your State Senator. Tell him or her that forcing retailers to carry a smart gun in their inventory is the wrong approach. If a market demand develops for smart guns, consumers will tell retailers that they want the product. Tell them that artificial markets cannot be created by state law and that responsible New Jersey gun owners know how to safely store their firearms when they are not in use.
