Wolves v. Elk Issue Heats Up

The predation of elk herds by growing populations of Canadian wolves in the West is an issue that is boiling. A good summary appears in today's Outdoor Wire, and a strong letter from the president of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to the Defenders of Wildlife and the Western Wildlife Conservancy challenges those groups to allow wolves to be managed by state wildlife professionals, just as other wildlife is managed.

Some elk herds have been devastated by wolves, prompting M. David Allen, RMEF's president and CEO, to write the leaders of the pro-wolf groups, "We believe that your organizations and others are contributing greatly to perhaps one of the worst wildlife management disasters since the destruction of bison herds in the 19th century."
