Puerto Rico Promotes Gun Safety with NSSF’s Project ChildSafe
Over the past ten years, NSSF has helped raise awareness about safe and secure storage of firearms in the home through its Project ChildSafe program, which has distributed more than 35 million free firearm safety kits to gun owners in all 50 states and in the U.S. Territories. Last Thursday, Puerto Rico gave a friendly welcome to NSSF’s representatives and launched the program with the support Governor Luis Fortuno at a well-attended press conference at the governor’s mansion. Speaking for NSSF was Senior Vice President and General Counsel Larry Keane. Although the governor did not attend the press conference due to a last-minute scheduling conflict, two of his cabinet members took the lead in announcing the program–Secretary of Justice Guillermo Somoza-Colombani and Secretary of Sports and Recreation Henry Neumann. They were joined by Superintendent of the Island Police Department Hector Pesquera and Angel Torres of Puerto Rico’s Shooting Sports Federation.
The firearm safety kits, which include a cable-style gun lock and firearm safety educational brochure, will be distributed at Puerto Rico’s 27 shooting facilities overseen by the Shooting Sports Federation and the Department of Sports and Recreation. NSSF also provided, free of charge, additional firearm safety literature and videos and child safety pledges.
At the press conference, NSSF announced the addition of Spanish-language versions of firearm safety literature at www.projectchildsafe.org.
