Presidential Note Passing

Remember in school when you had to read a note aloud if you were caught passing it to another person? Well, it seems President Obama long ago wrote a straightforward and frank note regarding his views on the Second Amendment. And now it’s sparking interest on the auction circuit, the equivalent of being read aloud.

He wrote this note in response to a letter from a sportsman who asked the President, “Are we law abiding sportsmen going to have to pay the price for another problem?” The problem the man is referring to is how Mr. Obama would react to a national tragedy, and whether he would then push for new restrictions.

There is no date on the note but it obviously dates from sometime between now and January of 2009. So the answer is fascinating, given the President’s long history of not defending the rights of gun-owners from his time in the Illinois State Senate, as the junior Senator from Illinois, and now as President. Not to mention his tacit blessing of the radically anti-gun Democratic National Party Platform issued at the DNC convention in Charlotte.

What Mr. Obama wrote back to this concerned citizen was this: “I believe in the 2nd Amendment, and the rights of Sportsmen like you. Period.”

“Sportsmen” is oddly capitalized, like a reference to an exotic species. And the note omits any mention of self-defense, among the many reasons other than hunting that Americans exercise their right to own a firearm. Barack Obama can claim vigorous support for the Second Amendment and “Sportsmen” but his true record says otherwise. Period.
