Oakland County Provides Huge Support for Project ChildSafe

Thirty law enforcement agencies from Oakland County, Michigan (north of Detroit) turned out in force to support NSSF’s Project ChildSafe program and responsible firearms ownership during a press conference with the Oakland County Board of Commissioners in Pontiac last week.

The agencies distributed gun locks and safety literature provided by the firearms industry during the county’s Gun Safety Awareness Day last Friday. NSSF’s Bill Brassard Jr., senior director of communications, reminded gun owners to securely store their firearms when not in use and also urged law enforcement to share Project ChildSafe’s “Own It? Respect It. Secure It.” message and video, “How to Talk to Your Kids about Gun Safety, via their websites and social media.

Helping to promote gun safety, the commissioners unveiled a public service announcement highlighting Project ChildSafe, and State Senator Tonya Schuitmaker (R-Lawton) announced the introduction of a bill that would exempt gun safety devices from state sales and use taxes—a bill that NSSF supports. During the press event, Auburn Hill Police Chief Doreen Olko said she makes locks and safety literature available to her city’s largest employers to help promote gun safety.
