Bird Mortality and Cats


In today’s Outdoor Wire, wildlife biologist Myron Wiley discusses how domestic cats can be both pet and predator. With respect to the latter, it is easy to see how cats play a leading role in causes of bird mortality, an issue that has recently, and improperly, been focused on lead ingestion from traditional ammunition.

As the chart below indicates, loss of habitat, window and building strikesand predation by cats are the leading causes of bird mortality. Perhaps those concerned about bird mortality would be best served by concentrating their efforts on these larger factors as opposed to spending their time and energy demonizing traditional ammunition that pays for conservation . . .
