At SHOT Show, Firearms Retailers and Shooting Ranges to Learn More about NSSF-AFSP 2017 Suicide Prevention Program

At SHOT Show next month, the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will provide more details about their jointly developed suicide prevention program for firearms retailers and shooting ranges to be rolled out in early 2017.

The two organizations announced the first-of-its-kind partnership earlier this year to develop educational resources for the firearms community, emphasizing the opportunity gun shops and shooting ranges have to educate their customers and family members and friends about this often-misunderstood subject.

NSSF reminds all firearms retailers and shooting range professionals attending the SHOT Show about the special seminar covering suicide and prevention on Tuesday, January 17, from 4 to 5 p.m. The seminar, which is free of charge, will feature AFSP Chief Medical Officer Christine Moutier, a nationally known expert on suicide, understanding warning signs and risk factors, and how available resources, treatment and deterring access to means can help save a life.

Earlier that day, at 10 a.m., NSSF and AFSP will have a press event to announce this important 2017 program. They will unveil some of the new educational materials and explain how firearms retailers, shooting ranges and the firearms community can play a role in helping to prevent suicide, which accounts for nearly two-thirds of all firearms fatalities annually.

Since the announcement of the partnership with AFSP, NSSF has heard from many industry members expressing their support for the development of an industry program dedicated to suicide prevention. NSSF fully supports AFSP’s Project 2025 and its goal of reducing the annual suicide rate 20 percent by 2025.

If you are attending SHOT Show and want to attend the seminar, go to your dashboard at SHOTShow.org and add this seminar to your shopping cart. If you’re not attending SHOT, look for more details about this major new program for retailers and ranges at SHOTShow.org or NSSF.org.
