Four Gun Measures Defeated in Senate
Last week was notable for renewed, but ultimately unsuccessful, attempts to move gun-related legislation on Capitol Hill. In the Senate last Monday, four proposals failed to receive the votes required to move forward. NSSF thanks all those who responded to the Action Alert to urge their senators to vote against the amendments offered by Sens. Feinstein and Murphy and in favor of those introduced by Sens. Grassley and Cornyn. On Thursday, Senate Amendment 4814 introduced by Sen. Collins survived a procedural vote. NSSF opposes the Collins Amendment because legislation that seeks to prevent terrorists from obtaining firearms must strike a proper balance between the interests of public safety, protecting the integrity of terrorism investigations and the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans. In the U.S. House, a group of Democratic representatives garnered considerable media attention before ending a 26-hour "sit-in" on Thursday to protest not being allowed to have a floor vote on a gun-related bill similar to one rejected by the Senate. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan addressed this tactic in his weekly press briefing saying, "… we are not going to allow stunts like this to stop us from carrying out the people's business." The House is in recess until after the Independence Day holiday.

- CALIFORNIA SENATE TAKING UP GUN CONTROL . . . The California Senate is fast-tracking a number of gun control measures, throwing process and procedure out the window. AB 1664, AB 1673 and AB 1674 could come up for a vote on the Senate floor as early as today. Contact your State Senator and urge him or her to vote "NO" on these bills.  MASS-PRODUCING PINOCCHIOS . . . U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) has been tagged previously for his tendency to play fast and loose with the facts. The Washington Post Fact Checker looked into the Senator's remarks during his recent filibuster, awarding him six Pinocchios in all for two different conflations that fit the junior senator's narrative, but not the facts. Geppetto is the fictional woodcarver who creates one Pinocchio in the children's story. Sen. Murphy mass-produces them.

Future communications from NICS will include instructions on how to access the New NICS E-Check User Guide to allow FFLs to become familiar with the look of the NICS E-Check prior to deployment of the New NICS. The look of the NICS E-Check after deployment will change; however, the functionality will remain the same.

Summer Local Champion" for promoting firearm safety in her region. Additional local safety champions will be announced during NSSF's fourth annual Project ChildSafe S.A.F.E. Summer campaign. - AMA DOESN'T SPEAK FOR ALL DOCS . . . The American Medical Association (AMA) represents 22 percent of the nation's physicians and pursues a public policy agenda directed by professional staff. Recently, the AMA renewed its call for the Centers for Disease Control to study "gun violence" as a public health issue. In response, Dr. Robert B. Young writes, "… there is nothing about guns or 'gun violence' that can be addressed as a 'public health issue.' Labeling gunshot injuries and deaths as a 'public health crisis' is a ruse."
