Cabela's Outdoor Fund Grant Helps
Provide Gun Locks to State Agencies

NSSF PROJECT CHILDSAFE TO DISTRIBUTE SAFETY MATERIALS . . . NSSF will make Project ChildSafe gun locks and safety education literature available to all 50 state fish and wildlife agencies in 2016, thanks to a generous $80,000 grant through the Cabela's Outdoor Fund. The grant provides state fish and wildlife agencies access to Project ChildSafe materials to further promote gun safety to hunters and target shooters, with an emphasis on distributing gun locks and safety literature in hunter education classes.   • TELL SEN. LEE TO STOP BLOCKING SPORTSMEN'S ACT . . . NSSF and 35 sportsmen's and conservation groups are urging Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) to stop blocking progress on portions of the Bipartisan Sportsmen's Act. The act is the most important piece of sportsmen's legislation in a generation and there is overwhelming Senate support for it. All hunters, anglers and target shooters should call Sen. Lee at 202-224-5444 and urge him to lift his hold, and allow the Bipartisan Sportsmen's Act to get a vote.

  • MINN. LAWMAKERS MOVE TO BLOCK LEAD-SHOT BAN . . . Minnesota legislators are moving to stop a Department of Natural Resources proposal to ban the use of lead shot in wildlife management areas. Last week, the House Mining and Outdoor Recreation Policy Committee passed HF3209 to prohibit the DNR from circumventing lawmakers. The Government Operations Committee will hold a hearing on HF3209 on Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. in the Legislature's Basement Hearing Room. Minnesota hunters are encouraged to attend and express support for HF3209.

  • REGISTER FOR NSSF CONGRESSIONAL FLY-IN . . . The 2016 NSSF Congressional Fly-In will be held April 12-13. Every year, the Fly-In provides an outstanding opportunity for leaders from NSSF voting member companies and supporting distributor and manufacturing member companies, as well as leading retailers, to meet with members of Congress. Those eligible can register now.

  • STATE ROUNDUP . . . The California State Sheriffs' Association opposes Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom's effort to place an initiative on the November ballot to require background checks for ammunition purchases and outlaw standard-capacity magazines. The Iowa Senate has approved HF 2279 to legalize the ownership and use of suppressors. The New Hampshire State Senate gave unanimous approval to House Bill 500 to allow the use of suppressors for hunting. HB 500 will now go back to the House for a concurrence vote.

The NSSF Survey Tracker is a monitoring service, sourced by Southwick Associates, that uses an online panel of active hunters and target shooters at HunterSurvey.com. The February 2016 edition report features purchases made in the past two months, Market Leaders for the two product groups of propellants or powders and presses, and responses to questions regarding days spent hunting and shooting at a range. NSSF members may view the the latest edition and historical survey trackers after logging in.

  • CHECK IT! FOR ILLINOIS YOUTH CONSERVATION . . . Purchasers of hunting, fishing and trapping licenses in Illinois are being asked to check "yes" to support youth conservation education by sending a $5 donation to the Illinois Conservation Foundation. "We're thankful for so many hunters and anglers who make sure to give children the same outdoors recreation opportunities we all had while growing up," said ICF Executive Director Eric Schmidt. Youth hunting education around the state includes mentored experiences with many games species.

  • 'RELEVANCY OF CONSERVATION' HIGHLIGHTED AT NORTH AMERICAN CONFERENCE . . . At the 81st North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in Pittsburgh last week, Wildlife Management Institute President Steve Williams pointed out the lack of any discussion by presidential candidates for support for conservation. At a plenary session, he said, "I believe our profession faces a crisis of relevancy, one that threatens sustainable funding and social and political support for the future." Read more.
