Happy Holidays from NSSF

All of us at the National Shooting Sports Foundation extend to you the warmest of holiday greetings. NSSF has once again chosen to make a $10,000 donation to Honored American Veterans Afield (HAVA) in lieu of sending holiday cards to our more than 12,000 members. HAVA is an organization dedicated to the needs of returning disabled veterans and active duty personnel, whose healing and re-integration in American life can be substantially enhanced by participation in hunting and the shooting sports. We wish you a Merry Christmas, the happiest of holidays and a very prosperous New Year.

SHOT Show

  • EXHIBITORS: BE SEEN ON SHOT SHOW TV . . . Visibility is everything at the SHOT Show, and NSSF is helping exhibitors stand out from the crowd like never before with its newest marketing tools: SHOT Show TV packages. For the first time ever, NSSF will be producing "SHOT Show TV," a daily TV program that will be filmed onsite in the Sands Expo lobby and then aired in hotel rooms throughout Las Vegas and on the SHOT Show website. Questions? Contact Dave Jeannette at 203-426-1320 ext. 220 or Chris Tatulli at 203-426-1320 ext. 214. Play video.

  • EXHIBITOR DEADLINES FOR DEC. 29 . . . With just four weeks remaining before the start of the 2016 SHOT Show—and the hectic days that come with Christmas and New Year just a week away—exhibitors have myriad items on their to-do list to check off. More than a dozen of those items have their deadline fall on Dec. 29. Read more.

  • KEEP YOUR STAFF MOTIVATED AT SHOT SHOW . . . Sit down with each member of your booth staff and ask them, "What do you want to get out of SHOT Show?" Maybe there's an industry celebrity they would like to meet while in Vegas. Maybe they would like to attend a class to get a better understanding of your customers or develop a new skill. Whatever their goals are, do what you can to help them achieve them. It may just be the motivation they need to be at their best when they are on booth duty. Read more.

  • YOUR TRADE SHOW SOCIAL MEDIA PLAN IN FIVE STEPS . . . If you plan to use social media as part of your SHOT Show exhibit marketing strategy, you are going to need a detailed plan—or that great idea for reaching out to attendees could end up being a flop. Here are five steps that can guide you to a successful trade show social media plan.

Government Relations

  • EXECUTIVE ORDERS ON THE WAY . . . President Obama will issue executive orders to impose tighter federal gun control regulations shortly after he returns from his Hawaiian vacation in January. Unable to pass gun control legislation on Capitol Hill, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest confirmed Thursday he expects the President's legal advisors will work through the holidays to determine the extent of the executive action. Last week, Obama met with Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire former New York City mayor and gun-control advocate.

  • 2016 WILL FEATURE UNRELENTING GUN CONTROL PRESSURE . . . Democrats running for office can expect intense pressure to fall into line as pro-gun control candidates, POLITICO reports. Scrutiny on this issue follows Hillary Clinton's embrace of gun control as a presidential campaign issue. In another sign the issue will be pressed, Bloomberg-funded Everytown for Gun Safety purchased air time during last week's Republican Presidential candidate debate to tout a role for the terrorist watch list in gun control. NSSF is countering this misleading narrative.

  • CAPITOL HILL ROUND-UP . . . U.S. House Democrats were unsuccessful in trying to eliminate a federal budgetary provision preventing funding of research into the criminal misuse of firearms as a public health issue. NSSF applauds congressional passage of the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act and the 2016 Omnibus Appropriations Legislation. Both include authorizations and appropriations important to hunters and recreational shooters. In addition, the omnibus includes a funding increase for the Bureau of Industry Security needed for the Export Control Reform initiative to progress.

Legal

  • D.C. CARRY RULES BACK TO SQUARE ONE . . . The Washington, D.C., Circuit Court of Appeals has undone years of litigation finding a temporarily assigned visiting judge should not have heard the case of Wrenn v. District of Columbia regarding the right of citizens to carry handguns. The judge had ruled unconstitutional the District's requirement that applicants for a D.C. carry license provide "good reason." The D.C. Circuit has vacated the order and the tough standard is back in place. Expect further litigation.

  • SEATTLE GUN, AMMO TAX CASE JUDGE PROMISES DECISION . . . Judge Palmer Robinson said Friday she will issue a decision by Tuesday in the challenge brought against Seattle's gun and ammunition sales tax set to take effect Jan 1. NSSF and other plaintiffs filed suit after the City Council passed an ordinance forcing firearms retailers in the city to pay $25 dollars on every firearm sold and 5 cents on every round of ammunition. Both sides in the case argued their positions on Friday.

NSSF Industry Summit

  • GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT NAMED PLATINUM SPONSOR OF NSSF INDUSTRY SUMMIT FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR . . . NSSF is pleased to announce that the Georgia Department of Economic Development will be returning for the third time as the Platinum Sponsor at the 2016 NSSF Industry Summit. Taking place June 6-8, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the 2016 event will work to share dynamic models of success that contribute toward the common industry goals of promoting hunting and target shooting, discuss threats to our success and explore new avenues of opportunities for growth and recruitment. • GUN STORE OWNER HELPS POLICE NAB SUSPECTED GUN THIEF . . . An El Cajon, California, firearms retailer on Friday helped police apprehend a man suspected in multiple area gun store thefts, Fox 5 San Diego reports. David Chong, owner of AO Sword Firearms, called 911 when he recognized the suspect and then kept him engaged in conversation until police arrived. AO Sword Firearms is an NSSF member retailer.

  • ATF Q&A . . . More great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. One question relates to the importer that should be entered into the A&D book when the foreign manufacturer and the importer have the same company name. Another question asks whether an employee who becomes prohibited from possessing firearms can continue to be employed by an FFL.

  • DID YOU KNOW? . . . NSSF has partnered with a global maker of sustainable, clean air filtration systems to provide its members a substantial discount on filters and filter systems. Learn more.
