First Shots Big City Tour Hits Mark in Philadelphia

Many attending the First Shots Big City Tour in greater Philadelphia were new to shooting and showed high hopes of continuing in the sport. A total of six ranges participated, hosting more than 300 people across the three-day event, which took place Aug. 28-30. Facilities taking part included Classic Pistol, Delaware Valley Sports Center, Inc., Firing Line, Heritage Guild of Easton, Ready Aim Fire and The Sportsman's Shop. Setting the Record Straight

WHY FIREARM SALES ARE CONTINUING TO RISE . . . USA Today writer Kevin Johnson over the holiday weekend wrote about the August uptick in National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) numbers. The NSSF's Larry Keane pointed out that gun purchases prompted by calls for new restrictions are "certainly legitimate to the person exercising their fundamental civil liberties protected by the Second Amendment. The concern that anti-gun politicians are seeking to infringe and restrict the right to keep and bear arms is very real and well-founded.''

Government Relations

  • CONGRESSMAN VISITS RUGER'S N.C. FACILITY . . . U.S. Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.) recently toured the Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc., manufacturing facility in Mayodan, North Carolina. The facility opened in 2013 and employs 200. "This facility and its employees have a tremendous impact on Rockingham County and surrounding communities," noted the Congressman. Mickey Wilson, Ruger's Director of Operations for Mayodan, thanked Rep. Walker "… for taking the time to meet with us and for his continued support of our critical Second Amendment rights."

  • STATE ROUNDUP . . . The Scotts Valley, California, City Council has imposed a 45-day moratorium on future firearms retailers opening while officials review future application of zoning laws. With the opening of dove season in California has come confusion over the ongoing implementation of the state's ban on use of traditional lead ammunition in hunting. The full ban will not be in effect until July 1, 2019. In 2015 lead shot may be used in areas that are not state ecological or wildlife areas.

Retailers/Ranges

  • 'BAD APPLE' DEALERS FEW AND FAR BETWEEN . . . The vast majority of federally licensed firearms retailers (FFLs) are law-abiding business owners that comply with a complex regulatory system. That's well established. Recently, however, the anti-gun crowd returned to one of their old and familiar arguments, namely that a few "bad apple" retailers need to be singled out for extra legal or regulatory scrutiny — and they returned to their stage a favored FFL who does not actually run a retail business most people would recognize as one, anyway. Read Larry Keane's NSSF blog post.

  • NSSF RECOGNIZES NEW VIDEO BY FIVE STAR RANGE . . . Shoot Smart, one of NSSF's Five Star Range members, recently produced a video that demonstrates and promotes safety and diversity in order to attract new shooters. Watch the video.

  • ATF Q&A . . . More great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. One question asks what an FFL should do when it finds it has lost a completed Form 4473. Another question asks what information should be entered into the A&D records in regards to the heading "Type" under "Description of Firearm."
