Shooting Industry Masters Raises
$71,650 for Shooting Sports

NSSF'S FIRST SHOTS A MAJOR BENEFICIARY . . . Over 300 industry professionals embraced the "Roaring Twenties" theme at the 13th annual Shooting Industry Masters, held July 24-25 at Claythorne Lodge in Columbus, Kansas, and, in great style, raised $71,650 in support of the shooting sports. Raffle ticket sales, side match admissions and custom gun auctions on GunBroker.com generated $57,600 for NSSF's First Shots program, bringing the seven-year total of funds raised by the Masters for First Shots to an impressive $338,600. "FMG's Shooting Industry Masters continues to be the most exciting industry-wide participatory competitive event," said Steve Sanetti, NSSF President and CEO. "They always find ways to outdo themselves, and the Masters just keeps getting better! Best of all is their completely unselfish devotion to NSSF's First Shots program, which has introduced many thousands of new participants to the shooting sports during the last decade. We salute everyone at FMG who continually help make this happen, and the hundreds of industry participants who had a great time for a great cause." Eighty industry teams and 64 sponsors made the 2015 edition of the Shooting Industry Masters most memorable. The USA Shooting Team received $14,050 in support as the squad prepares for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Setting the Record Straight

NSSF KEEPS EMPHASIS ON FIXING NICS . . . The tragic theater shooting in Lafayette, Louisiana, the three-day NICS waiting period and comments by Gov. Bobby Jindal on mental health record reporting were of particular interest to the New Orleans Times Picayune. NSSF took the opportunity to point out that "… the focus should be on ensuring that states submit all disqualifying criminal and mental health records to the background check system and that the system gets the support it needs at the federal and state level." Government Relations

  • THROWING IN THE TOWEL, SENDING OUT A LETTER . . . Two developments demonstrate that no gun control legislation is likely to be considered in Congress. U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) admitted his effort to expand background checks to cover private firearms transfers would not be taken up. Meanwhile, 13 anti-gun Senators announced not a new bill, but that that they had sent a letter to three retail chains and to NSSF asking for the end of what they termed "default" sales of guns.

  • FEDERAL, STATE AND LEGAL ROUNDUP . . . The Los Angeles City Council has approved an NSSF-opposed ordinance outlawing ammunition magazines of more than 10 rounds. NSSF has filed an amicus brief in support of a constitutional challenge to the California Handgun Roster that runs in tandem with our own challenge. In Seattle, a second hearing will be held on a plan for a city tax on all firearm and ammunition sales. A new ATF report shows ownership of suppressors growing greatly in popularity. • ATF Q&A . . . More great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. One question asks if federal firearms law requires licensees to comply with state laws and local ordinances when selling firearms. Another question asks who should be categorized as "nonimmigrant aliens."

  • SEMINARS SLATED IN WASHINGTON AND WISCONSIN THIS MONTH . . . Two NSSF Retailer Education Seminars are scheduled this month: August 11 in Bellevue, Washington, and August 18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. All firearms retailers in these regions are encouraged to register to attend.

  • DID YOU KNOW? . . . Professional burglary, particularly smash-and-grab theft, is one of the most serious threats firearm retailers face today. • THIS DOCTOR KNOWS 'REAL GUN SAFETY' WHEN HE SEES IT . . . The attempt by gun-prohibitionist groups to alter their identities by calling themselves "gun safety" groups—think Everytown for Gun Safety, the Michael Bloomberg-funded gun-control group—is not a new trend, writes Dr. Timothy Wheeler, director of Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership, in a recent column. The strategy is a calculated one, and Dr. Wheeler provides some history while also mentioning NSSF and other groups that have worked diligently to provide "real gun safety" tools and education to gun owners.
