  • NSSF SUPPORTS H.R. 2710,LAWFUL PURPOSE AND SELF-DEFENSE ACT . . . U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop (R-Utah) has introduced H.R. 2710, the Lawful Purpose and Self Defense Act of 2015. The bill, supported by NSSF, would revise the Gun Control Act of 1968, as amended, to replace the "sporting purposes" and "sporting use" sections with modernizing language used to better define whether firearms and ammunition can be lawfully imported, possessed and transferred.   • LEGISLATIVE AND LEGAL ROUNDUP . . . The U.S. Supreme Court has denied review of the 2014 decision by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upholding San Francisco’s firearms storage law, while NSSF and SAAMI filed a motion for summary judgment in our California microstamping lawsuit. In Wisconsin, the state Assembly voted to repeal the 1970's era law requiring a 48-hour waiting period for handgun purchases. Read NSSF’s Government Relations Update for more.

  • ATF Q&A . . . Many great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. The first question asks if an approved Request and Approved for Permanent Change of Station is sufficient proof of residency. The second question asks if there is a dealer's license available to engage in business only at gun shows.

  • USITC FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION DATA FOR APRIL 2015 . . . NSSF tracks and reports monthly U.S. import and export units for several sporting arms, ammunition and optics categories from the U.S. International Trade Commission.   • PROJECT CHILDSAFE IN SAN DIEGO . . . A press conference last week announcing the partnership between the San Diego Police Department and NSSF's Project ChildSafe to promote firearm safety in the city drew outstanding coverage in the media. More than half a dozen news outlets covered the event, with this KSUI clip and Times of San Diego story serving as two examples. "Project ChildSafe is about protecting lives and keeping unsecured firearms out of the wrong hands," said San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman.

  • LOUISIANA PASSES SCHOOL GUN SAFETY BILL . . . Both the Louisiana House and Senate have passed a bill to allow firearm accident and prevention training in schools. The legislation, HR 446, was introduced by State Rep. Blake Miguez (R-Erath), who knows something about firearms and safety since he's a competition shooter and former Top Shot TV show contestant. The bill was sent to Gov. Bobby Jindal for approval last week.

News of Note

  • KEMPFFER A HALL OF FAMER . . . Bill Kempffer has been voted into the Sporting Clays Association of North Carolina Hall of Fame "for significant contributions to North Carolina Sporting Clays, for selfless support in the education of others, outstanding achievement and longstanding commitment to this extraordinary sport." Kempffer is owner of the Deep River Sporting Clays and Shooting School and a member of the NSSF Board of Governors.

  • ZINCZENKO NAMED CEO OF BONNIER . . . Eric Zinczenko has been named CEO of Bonnier Corporation, publisher of Field & Stream, Outdoor Life and NSSF's SHOT Business magazines. Zinczenko, who has been with Bonnier since 2007, most recently served as executive vice president of the company. With the appointment effective immediately, Zinczenko will succeed David Freygang, who is retiring from Bonnier Corp but will remain on as a consultant through the end of the year.

  • EXPANDING HUNTING IN NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGES . . . The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced, as part of Great Outdoors Month, a proposal to expand fishing and hunting opportunities on 21 refuges throughout the National Wildlife Refuge System.

  • USA SHOOTING NATIONALS . . . California and Arkansas shooters dominated the trap competition at the 2015 National Championships last week, earning seven medals in all. National titles were captured by Golden State competitors Brian Burrows (Fallbrook) and Ashley Carroll (Solvang), and Junior National titles were earned by the Natural State's Dustin McGowan (Greenwood) and Grace Hambuchen (Maumelle).

  • LASER SIGHTS AND DINOSAURS . . . The movie Jurassic World, whose debut earned a record $511.8 million worldwide, makes use of real-world industry products to help fend off sci-fi creatures. The firearms relied on by rangers during a dark, jungle night encounter with a deadly dinosaur feature Crimson Trace red laser sights. Crimson Trace frequently works with Hollywood and other prop companies and movie production crews. Read more.

  • OREGON AMMUNITION SURVEY RESULTS STILL NOT AVAILABLE . . . A year after a controversial survey was conducted with Oregon hunters about their attitudes toward use of traditional ammunition containing lead components, results have yet to be released, according to a news story in the East Oregonian. The survey was a project of the state fish and wildlife agency and Oregon State University. Officials said they had not gotten around to writing up results, while others speculated results were being suppressed.
