Pre-SHOT Show Event to Support Disabled Veterans
 NSSF, HAVA TEAM UP FOR JAN. 18 GOLF FUNDRAISER . . . NSSF and Honored American Veterans Afield (HAVA) are joining forces to host a charity golf event at the 2015 SHOT Show on Sunday, Jan. 18, at Bear's Best Las Vegas. Intended to be a fun industry event before the serious business of SHOT Show begins, the HAVA Invitational Golf Classic is for players from our industry. - NSSF UNDETERRED BY LENO CANCELLATION . . . Caving in to pressure from the anti-gun lobby, entertainer Jay Leno last week cancelled his appearance at the NSSF State of the Industry Dinner at SHOT Show. Despite Leno's untimely decision, NSSF ensures attendees to the hugely popular event that it will fill the slot with a major talent who will respect the contributions of industry, its millions of customers and the Second Amendment. Anti-gun groups used false statements about industry and its commitment to firearms safety to mount pressure on Leno. In a statement, NSSF said, "We are not deterred by their publicity seeking nor are we unfamiliar with the bullying political tactics of the gun control groups that seem to have as little respect for the First Amendment as they continually demonstrate with regard to the Second Amendment."
 NSSF MEMBERS SAVE BIG AT SHOT SHOW . . . 'OPERATION CHOKE POINT' LEGISLATION INTRODUCED . . . U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.) has introduced the Financial Institution Customer Protection Act to address “Operation Choke Point.” The legislation most notably protects firearms and ammunition industry members by making clear that "reputational risk" cannot be reason enough for banks to terminate a customer's financial service. We have heard from NSSF members about banking relationships being terminated and many of those examples referenced the "reputational risk" of doing business with companies in the firearms and ammunition industry.  U.S. HOUSE PASSES NSSF-SUPPORTED DUCK STAMP PRICE INCREASE . . . The U.S. House last week passed H.R. 5069, the Federal Duck Stamp Act of 2014, introduced by U.S. Rep. John Fleming (R-La.). This bill raises the price duck hunters over the age of 16 are required pay for a stamp to $25 from the current $15, its price since 1991. The Senate still has to act on the legislation before the end of the year for it to become law. If passed, and signed into law, this bill would benefit hunters through an increase of more than $100 million dollars for wetland conservation, which is why NSSF is an advocate for the bill.

 FLORIDA TO ALLOW HUNTING WITH SUPPRESSORS, OHIO CONSIDERING . . . The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Friday voted unanimously to repeal the state's 57-year ban on hunting with suppressors. Effective immediately, Florida hunters are allowed to use sound suppressors on firearms while hunting deer, gray squirrels, rabbits, turkey, quail and crows. Florida joins 32 other states in allowing the use of suppressors for hunting all game animals. Meanwhile, a committee of the Ohio State Senate may consider legislation this week that would repeal that state's prohibition on hunting with firearm suppressors. NSSF ASKS MORE TIME ON CALIF. LEAD AMMO BAN IMPLEMENTATION . . . NSSF is urging the California Fish and Game Commission to allow the industry time to develop more alternatives and increase the supply of non-traditional ammunition, rather than continue on the current fast-track path to implementing AB711, the California law outlawing the use of traditional lead component ammunition in hunting. - PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FOCUS GROUP . . . NSSF is in the qualitative/listening phase for a market research study on the consumer self-defense and tactical markets. In order to better understand what NSSF members would like to learn from customers in these segments, we would like to hear from you. Industry personnel that are highly involved in the self-defense and/or tactical market are invited to contact NSSF Director of Industry Research and Analysis Jim Curcuruto for information on this Focus Group, which will be held at the 2015 SHOT Show at noon on Thursday, Jan. 22.
- DIVERSITY PANEL SET FOR RANGE AND RETAILER SEMINAR AT SHOT SHOW . . . With Marily Haley, range manager at Shoot Smart Range in Grand Prairie, Texas, recently joining Donny Adair, Frank Manuel and Lilly Gibbs, the stage is set for a very informative retailer seminar during the 2015 SHOT Show. NSSF will lead this panel discussion that will focus on opportunities that exist to make our industry more inclusive and allow ranges and retailers to expand their customer bases through diversity. NSSF is offering this educational seminar Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Light food and beverages will be provided. Registration is $20 and is required for this panel discussion. - REMINDER OF FBI-NICS EXTENDED 'BLACK FRIDAY' HOURS . . . The FBI Criminal Justice Information Service Division's National Instant Criminal Background Check System Section has announced extended hours of service on Nov. 28 ("Black Friday") for E-check users and state Point-of-Contact (POC) programs. To better accommodate the longstanding history of record-breaking volume on this day, the FBI will bring the NICS in-service starting at 4:30 a.m. EST for NICS E-check users and for state POC programs. The NICS Contracted Call Centers will open, as normal, at 8 a.m. EST. Read the FBI-NICS Alert.
- ATF Q&A . . . We had a number of great questions come into the NSSF compliance hotline this week. Here are just two of the many we’ve received. The first question deals with the number of bound books required for a manufacturer that also performs gunsmithing tasks and sales. - WHAT YOU NEED TO RECORD FOR DISPOSITIONS IN YOUR A&D BOOK . . . The ATF required Book of Acquisition and Disposition is specific. It dictates the information fields, the specific format that must be followed and, among other things, it determines the timing of when entries must be made. To ATF, the A&D Book's importance is directly connected to the bureau's ability to trace firearms through the National Tracing Center, when needed. There is a typical path that the firearms industry follows in the lifecycle of a regulated firearm: Manufacturer/Importer - Wholesaler or Distributor - Retailer or Dealer - and then to the non-licensed customer. 11 MILLION MEALS TO LESS FORTUNATE . . . When you're passing the turkey and stuffing around the Thanksgiving dinner table, here's a story to tell -- one that would not be possible without the thoughtfulness and generosity of hunters. This infographic from NSSF shows that 11 million meals are provided annually to the less fortunate through donations of venison by hunters. Nearly 2.8 million pounds of game meat make it to shelters, food banks and church kitchens and onto the plates of those in need.
LAURIE LEE DOVEY TO LEAVE POMA . . . The Professional Outdoor Media Association announced today that Laurie Lee Dovey has resigned as executive director after 10 years of full-time service to the organization. Dovey, a founding board member and officer and POMA's first executive director, said it was time for a change, both personally and professionally. She’ll focus on her business as content provider and consultant. POMA members or corporate partners with questions or concerns should reach out to Shelly Moore, membership director, at 814-254-4719. POMA's Board of Directors has formed a search committee and in the coming weeks will be working to identify candidates for the executive director position. - MIDWAYUSA FOUNDATION RECEIVES DONATION FROM SSSF . . . The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation last week donated $246,500 to the MidwayUSA Foundation, Inc., an endowment program that provides financial support for youth shooting teams. The funds were deposited into the accounts of 75 member teams of the Scholastic Clay Target Program and Scholastic Pistol Program representing 26 states. Teams earned the money through participation in recent SCTP and SPP regional shoots. SSSF has funded accounts for 273 teams in 40 states this year. Read more.
