NSSF Poll: Americans Would Rather CDC Spend Time and Resources on Disease and Viruses, Not 'Gun Violence' Studies

An overwhelming majority of Americans agree that the misuse of guns in violent crimes is a matter for the criminal justice system, not a public health issue. They also believe that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) should not spend resources on the study of "gun violence" but instead should concentrate on viruses and disease. These findings are among the results of a national scientific poll commissioned by the National Shooting Sports Foundation to determine whether adults share the view of some gun control organizations and activists that the use of guns in crime, for which they use the short-hand term "gun violence," is a public health issue. Now we have an answer and it is a resounding "No." Read the Townhall.com story.

Government Relations

  • http://nssf.org/share/images/Capitol_150.jpgCONGRESS SEEKS OPERATION CHOKE POINT STORIES . . . U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.) is asking businesses affected by Operation Choke Point to come forward and to explain their story through a new email address, chokepointstory@mail.house.gov, for businesses. The information provided will not be shared without consent. Through Operation Choke Point, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and Department of Justice attempted to stop financial institutions from offering financial services to some regulated industries. This operation was first aimed at non-depository lenders but expanded to ammunition and firearms sales, among other things. "This platform was created so that if you own a business and have been affected by Operation Choke Point you can share your story so that I can continue to apply pressure to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Department of Justice, and other federal agencies who are applying unnecessary pressure on you," Luetkemeyer said.

  • NEW YORK TIMES FINDS WHAT IT WANTED TO FIND, DESPITE THE DATA . . . The New York Times recently ran an article that claimed a new FBI study shows a sharp increase in mass shootings since 2000. While the study itself explains that its focus was on "active shootings" and not "mass shootings," the New York Times was undeterred in what appears to be its ongoing quest to find data supportive of its editorial predisposition against Americans owning firearms. NSSF's Larry Keane explains.
