NSSF Campaign in Chicago, Detroit and Flint Targets Illegal Firearm Purchases

'DON'T LIE FOR THE OTHER GUY' . . . The National Shooting Sports Foundation today launched a six-week outdoor advertising and radio campaign in and around Chicago, as well as Detroit and Flint, Mich., to remind the public that stiff penalties are in place for individuals convicted of straw purchases of firearms. Billboard advertisements for NSSF's ongoing "Don't Lie for the Other Guy" program are now up in key locations in the Chicago, Detroit and Flint markets with the message, "Buy a gun for someone who can't and buy yourself 10 years in jail." In addition, two radio ads [ad 1] [ad 2] will run in rotation more than 4,500 times in these markets. More than 32 million total media impressions will be delivered through March via the public-education program funded by the firearms industry. The billboard features a new and more striking design. "Don't Lie" was formed as a cooperative program between ATF and NSSF. The effort was developed over a decade ago to raise public awareness about the seriousness of the crime of purchasing a firearm for someone who cannot legally do so. The program also helps educate federally licensed firearms retailers so they can be better prepared to deter potential straw purchases.

  • RETAILER TIP: STRAW-PURCHASE DETERRENCE . . . NSSF FFL Compliance Consultant and former ATF Deputy Assistant Director Wally Nelson provides an effective and efficient strategy on using your 4473 denial file to help detect and prevent straw purchases.

Industry News

  • REMINGTON MAKES IT OFFICIAL, WILL OPEN PLANT IN ALABAMA . . . Reports of a Remington expansion to Alabama began making the rounds on Friday, and today Gov. Robert Bentley made the official announcement: Remington Outdoor Co., formerly Freedom Group, will expand to the old Chrysler building in Huntsville, Ala., and create more than 2,000 new jobs within the next 10 years. Bentley joined Remington Chairman and CEO George Kollitides and other state and local leaders for the announcement. "I am honored to welcome Remington to Alabama," Bentley said. It didn't take long for political operatives for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to begin political damage-control work. The company currently employs 1,300 at its historic plant in Ilion, N.Y. Said Kollitides, "This additional capacity is essential to fulfill demand and introduce new products. Having watched our company grow from 2,400 employees in 2008 to 4,200 employees by the end of 2013, a five-year, 75 percent increase, it is easy to see why we're investing now."

  • CABELA'S REPORTS RECORD FOURTH QUARTER . . . Outdoor retailer Cabela's (NYSE:CAB) on Thursday reported that fourth-quarter sales increased 4.9 percent compared to the same period a year ago. Retail store revenue was up 7.3 percent. For the quarter, net income was up 5.5 percent to $94.7 million compared to $89.8 million the previous year. For fiscal 2013, net income increased 22 percent to $238.3 million compared to $195.3 million the previous year.

  • CROSMAN ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL OPENING OF EUROPEAN DISTRIBUTION CENTER . . . Crosman Corporation announced the opening of a new logistics facility in Copenhagen, Denmark, as part of a strategic initiative to accelerate order fulfillment to the company's growing customer base in Europe. SHOT Show

  • EXHIBITOR AND ATTENDEE SATISFACTION CONTINUE UPWARD TREND . . . The 2014 SHOT Show at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas was another one for the record books—record attendance, record sales and record industry unity. The show also registered record satisfaction with attendees and exhibitors alike. Read more on the SHOT Show Blog.

  • 2014 INDUSTRY DAYS AT THE RANGE A BIG SUCCESS . . . SHOT Show Media Day at the Range, with more than 1,100 members of the media participating and 142 manufacturers exhibiting, made the ninth such day the largest in its history and the biggest hands-on media event in the hunting and shooting industry. The event, held outside of Las Vegas the day before the SHOT Show began, was followed the next morning by the inaugural four-hour-long SHOT Show Buyer Day at the Range, which allowed 456 distributors, dealers and retailers the opportunity to test and learn about new products. Together, the two events, sponsored by NSSF, were called SHOT Show Industry Days at the Range. Read more about these events in a press release from their producer.

Government Relations

  • http://nssf.org/share/images/Capitol_150.jpgFEDERAL COURT STRIKES DOWN 'GOOD CAUSE' REQUIREMENT FOR CONCEALED CARRY IN CALIFORNIA . . . A federal court has struck down the interpretation of many California jurisdictions that the state's concealed carry laws required responsible, law-abiding gun owners to first demonstrate "good cause" to obtain a permit. The court ruled that this practice infringes on the Second Amendment, namely the right to carry a loaded handgun in public for self-defense. The Ninth Circuit's decision in Peruta et al v. San Diego County is a vindication for gun owners. As the court stated, "Put simply, a law that destroys ... a right central to the Second Amendment must be struck down." Last Thursday's decision was also significant in that there is now a split among the circuit courts (3-2) on the scope of the Second Amendment and the level of scrutiny that should be applied in determining whether gun-control regulations infringe upon one's ability to exercise their constitutional rights.

  • VIRGINIA SUNDAY HUNTING PASSES STATE SENATE COMMITTEE . . . The Virginia State Senate Agriculture Committee last Thursday by a vote of 11 to 4 passed the House of Delegates version of the Sunday hunting bill required by legislative procedure. That legislation will now go the Senate floor. The NSSF-led Sunday Hunting Coalition of sportsmen's groups, industry leaders and Virginia businesses is urging supporters to keep the pressure on toward repeal of the commonwealth's longstanding ban on Sunday hunting. Virginia residents should contact their state senator to ensure that Sunday hunting becomes law in the commonwealth. Take action.

  • DHS AMMUNITION PURCHASES DOWN SINCE 2009, GAO REPORTS . . . The Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) ammunition purchases have been declining for the last four years and will continue on this trend in 2014, according to a report issued last week by the independent Government Accountability Office (GAO). In the past year, the Internet has been full of rumors and speculation concerning large-scale ammunition acquisition by the various agencies that are part of DHS. Though it is doubtful that this report will extinguish those rumors, it does provide factual information of interest to those in the industry who field questions from customers asking about the Internet reports. Read the GAO report.

  • R.I. NEWSPAPER BACKS FIXING NICS . . . The Providence Journal has endorsed the work of Rhode Island's Joint Behavioral Health and Firearms Safety Task Force for formally recommending that all appropriate mental health records be sent to the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Rhode Island is one of several states that does not provide such information, which is crucial to keeping firearms out of the hands of prohibited persons. NSSF continues to work to advance our FixNICS initiative in several state capitals. Learn more about FixNICS.

  • NSSF 2014 CONGRESSIONAL FLY-IN APRIL 2-3 . . . The annual NSSF Congressional Fly-In will be held Wednesday and Thursday, April 2-3, 2014. Information on the Fly-In can be found here. Last year's event saw record numbers for attendance and coincided with the U.S. Senate's votes on what would have been several harmful gun-control proposals.

ATF

  • ATF AGAIN RELEASES FORM WAITING TIMES . . . The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has released and posted a chart to provide a guide to the waiting times for processing of its various forms. NSSF encourages use of the e-form system, although the ATF chart does not make a distinction for electronic versus paper filing. See the ATF chart.  We previously reported on this chart when ATF provided it to us during the SHOT Show. We are pleased ATF accepted our suggestion to post this information so industry members can be aware of the backlog.  ATF's customer service resources have not kept pace with the growing volume of legally required paperwork.  NSSF is trying to  secure ATF more funding so it can provided better and more timely customer service to industry.
