NFL Says No to Daniel Defense Super Bowl Ad

Panel members from Fox News' "The Five" discuss the decision.

The National Football League's policy against allowing the depiction of firearms in advertising during its airtime, which the league cited when Daniel Defense tried to buy time during the upcoming Super Bowl, seems more than a little selective and hypocritical to NSSF's Larry Keane, who takes on the policy in a new blog post, with the support of some of the nation's best conservative commentators.

You can read the feature article, SHOT Show Industry Days at the Range.

Government Relations

  • NSSF, RETAILERS SUE SUNNYVALE, CALIF. . . . NSSF plans to file a lawsuit today against the City of Sunnyvale, Calif., and the Sunnyvale City Council to prevent an ordinance passed in November from being enforced against responsible and law-abiding firearms retailers doing business within city limits. In their complaint, NSSF and local plaintiffs are challenging the city's newly passed firearms and ammunition reporting and sales requirements on the grounds that they are preempted by existing federal and state laws. Retailers in Sunnyvale already must comply with a myriad of state and federal laws in operating their businesses. These businesses are entitled to own, purchase and sell firearms and ammunition under the same rules, not a patchwork of different and conflicting local laws across California. Read the lawsuit.

  • SENATE ACTION EXPECTED TODAY TO REAUTHORIZE UNDETECTABLE FIREARMS ACT . . . Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives on a voice vote reauthorized the Undetectable Firearms Act. The U.S. Senate returns from its Thanksgiving holiday recess today and is expected to follow suit since the 25-year-old law expires at midnight. NSSF supports the reauthorization of the act, telling key leaders in both chambers in mid-November that "the current law has proven effective in preventing the illegal manufacture, importation, sale or possession of undetectable firearms." Recent news coverage of plastic firearms being made with 3D printing technology and demands for action by anti-gun activists have resulted in some members of Congress calling for new and more extensive legislation. At this late hour, however, reauthorization seems the only likely outcome.

  • NSSF-SUPPORTED SPORTSMEN'S ACT GAINING SUPPORT IN U.S. HOUSE . . . A new package of pro-sportsmen bills recently was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressional Sportsmen Caucus (CSC) Co-Chairman Bob Latta (R-Ohio) and cosponsored by the other members of CSC leadership in the House, Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), Rob Wittman (R-Va.) and Tim Walz (D -Minn.). The SHARE Act (HR 3590) gained three more co-sponsors this week, and NSSF is working to increase that number to expedite consideration of the bill by the U.S. House. Please contact your U.S. Representative and urge him or her to co-sponsor the most important package of pro-sportsmen bills in a generation.

  • SOUTH DAKOTA TELLS LEGISLATORS TO FIXNICS . . . One of South Dakota's daily newspapers, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, is calling on that state's legislators to reach an agreement early in the 2014 session on legislation that will institute a process to submit adjudicated mental health records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). State law currently prevents that from happening. NSSF's FixNICS initiative is active in several state capitals, including Pierre. Four states passed laws to FixNICS in 2013. Read the editorial.

  • NEW REQUIREMENTS . . . The ATF has proposed establishing new requirements for anyone using an NFA Trust, including a mandatory certification from their local Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) for each item they purchase or transfer. NSSF sees this proposal as an unjustified obstacle to legal actions by law-abiding entities and has filed a comment letter with the ATF in opposition to the certification requirement.

  • CNN POLL: SUPPORT FOR STRICTER GUN CONTROL FADES . . . According to a new CNN/ORC International survey, 6 percent fewer Americans support stricter gun-control laws than they did in January of 2013, just weeks after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. Read the CNN article reporting the findings of the new survey and read the actual survey.
