Ranges/Retailers

  • RANGE INDUSTRY EXPERTS SAY MAKE SHOT SHOW PLANS NOW . . . Visit www.rangereport.org to read Barbara Baird’s report on what various shooting facility operators have to say about the value of attending the SHOT Show -- and why you should make your plans now. Applying for credentials at www.shotshow.org will allow you not only to apply for admission privileges, but also to register for SHOT Show University and other offerings at SHOT that these range operators recommend.

  • SHOT BUSINESS: CAPITALIZE ON BIG-GAME SEASON . . . Big-game season offers retailers a great opportunity to sell boots, knives, optics, ammo and rifles. But in order to capitalize on the season, you and your staff need to know the precise selling points for each of these products.  The SHOT Business magazine feature “The Big Game,” is a special section dedicated to helping you and your staff do just that. In addition, SHOT Business Editor Slaton L. White offers his thoughts on why the bolt-action still makes sense. Visit shotbusiness.com to find the most recent news briefs, what's selling where, new products, what's new from NSSF and much more.

Government Relations

  • HOUSE COMMITTEE TO VOTE ON BILL TO PERMANENTLY ESTABLISH HUNTING/WILDLIFE COUNCIL . . . On Wednesday, the House Natural Resources Committee will vote to advance HR 2799, legislation to authorize the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council (WHHCC.)  Introduced by Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus Co-Chair Robert Latta along with Co-Chair Bennie Thompson and Vice Chairs Rob Wittman and Tim Walz and four of their colleagues, HR 2799 would permanently establish the WHHCC, on which NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti currently serves, to advise the Departments of the Interior and Agriculture on wildlife and habitat conservation, hunting and recreational shooting. Authorizing this important committee will ensure the hunting and shooting communities a place at the table when these key federal agencies make policy decisions on issues important to the firearms and ammunition industry for generations to come. NSSF had a lead role in drafting this legislation along with the Boone and Crockett Club, the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation and other partner organizations.

  • SHOOTING RANGE BILL ADVANCES IN U.S. HOUSE . . . The U.S. House Judiciary Committee last week voted to advance the Target Practice and Marksmanship Training Support Act (HR 2463). This bi-partisan legislation is sponsored in the House by Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus (CSC) member Duncan Hunter and Caucus Vice-Chair Tim Walz, along with a bipartisan coalition of 14 of their House colleagues. This bill, strongly supported by NSSF since its inception, would allow states to use the excise taxes already collected on sporting equipment and ammunition to develop and maintain much-needed public shooting ranges while also resulting in increased wildlife conservation funding. Having already received the approval of the Natural Resources Committee, passage of HR 2463 through the Judiciary committee was the final step necessary to send the bill to the floor for consideration by the House.

  • CALIFORNIA’S AB 711 BECOMES LAW WITHOUT KEY REPORT . . . California Gov. Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 711 into law, eventually making it illegal to hunt anywhere in the state with traditional lead ammunition despite the fact that a key governmental report on the presence of lead in blood samples from California condors was never released. That report should have been produced in June 2013 while AB 711 was before the legislature so it could be reviewed and its conclusions debated prior to passage. The 2012 report is now nearly four months overdue. AB 711 is, at best, a drastically overreaching attempt to move forward the anti-traditional ammunition agenda to curtail hunting in the state. NSSF will continue to keep you posted on developments in the continuing fight to stop implementation of AB 711. Visit HuntForTruth.org for more information.

  • http://nssf.org/share/images/HumaneWatch1.pngHUMANE WATCH ADS, VIDEO EXPOSE HSUS FUND-RAISING FRADULENCE . . . The organization Humane Watch is taking its ever-expanding case against the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to the Metro station servingWashington D.C.'s Capitol Hill with provocative posters and banners that point out that the organization that advertises as if its funds go to support animal shelters across the country, in fact, only spends 1 percent of its intake on these activities. Humane Watch has also posted a video of person-on-the-street interviews to show reactions to this deceptive practice. NSSF long ago called out HSUS for the hidden and duplicitous anti-hunting agenda of its leadership, and we have squared off against it on many occasions. For more information on Humane Watch, visit the organization's website.

  • SAN FRANCISCO WANTS RESIDENTS' PRE-2000 BAN MAGAZINES . . . San Francisco's already highly restrictive gun-control laws became even more so last week with the Board of Supervisors' passage of a retrospective ban on magazines with more than a 10-round capacity. It was already illegal in California to buy, sell or carry such magazines, but their possession if bought before the 2000 law went into effect was grandfathered. City residents will have 90 days to surrender these magazines to police or be guilty of a misdemeanor. The ordinance does not apply to the military, law enforcement or the entertainment industry's use of magazines "as props" in television or movies.

  • CHAIRMAN OF MASS. LEGISLATURE GUN STUDY PANEL RUNS FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL . . . Mass. State Rep. Harold Naughton, who is chairing the Legislature's Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security, last week announced his candidacy for state attorney general. Naughton's committee held hearings around the state attended by Smith & Wesson employees in Springfield and by Kahr Arms employees in Worcester, where NSSF testified that the focus of any future legislation should be on ensuring the state sends its adjudicated mental health records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Naughton was quoted in a Springfield Republican story saying, "I have tried to assure the law-abiding, firearm-owning public that we pose no threat to the livelihood of the people who work at Smith & Wesson." NSSF is closely monitoring legislative developments and actively working with member companies in Massachusetts.
