NSSF's FFL Compliance Package
is the Real Deal

PREMIUM RETAILER MEMBERSHIP . . . NSSF is still receiving calls from retailers who are incredulous about the value that NSSF's Premium Retailer Membership provides. The following information should drive home the point that this truly is the best compliance package available for the firearms retailer. Read all about it here and upgrade your membership today.

Ranges

  • SUCCESSFUL NSSF COMPLIANCE WORKSHOP HELD IN NEW ORLEANS, NEXT ONE IN SAN DIEGO DEC. 8-10 . . . More than 80 members of the shooting range industry, varying from manufacturers and state agency officials to indoor and outdoor range owners, walked away from NSSF’s fourth Lead Management and OSHA Compliance Workshop, held Oct. 13-15 in New Orleans, with knowledge that will allow themselves to strengthen their compliance efforts. NSSF's Zach Snow, Manager, Shooting Promotions, thanked Gold Coast Armory, American Air Filter and Western Range for their sponsorship, while urging shooting industry professionals to sign up for the last such workshop of the year, to be held in San Diego Dec. 8-10. Interested sponsors should email Chris Tatulli, NSSF Director, Exhibit and Sponsorship Sales, or call him at 203-426-1320 ext. 214. Snow also encourages shooting range professionals to utilize the NSSF Range Consultant Compliance Program.

Government Relations

  • CALIF. ‘SMART GUNS’ SUBJECT OF PBS NEWSHOUR, NSSF POINTS OUT LIMITATIONS . . . User-authorized technology for firearms has been discussed for 20 years and is again a favorite topic for journalists, most of whom are far more enamored of electronics than they are conversant with firearms. NSSF’s Larry Keane told PBS NewsHour, the industry does not oppose the development of so-called ‘Smart Gun’ technologies, but it should be up to consumers to decide for themselves if they want this feature, so the industry is opposed to mandating firearms be equipped with these devices. Simpler answers to preventing unauthorized access to firearms are readily at hand, Keane said.

  • AFTER ALL IS SAID AND DONE IN SACRAMENTO, MORE IS BEING SAID . . . One week after Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB 711 into law, the outdoor writer for The Bakersfield Californian excoriated proponents of the statewide ban on the use of traditional lead ammunition in hunting, saying they “... have lied to hunters, gun owners and the public about their anti-gun and anti-hunting intentions and agendas.” NSSF made this same argument in the state legislative battle against AB 711. Because Brown did veto some of the anti-gun proposals that the state legislature sent to his desk, it took little time for the view of the professional gun-control community to be reflected in the national media coverage. The New York Times noted the governor’s actions had “...substantially muted the effect of the gun control legislation passed this year in California.”

  • SUPREME COURT TO HEAR ‘STRAW PURCHASE’ CASE . . . The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments this coming January in Abramski v. United States, the case of a retired police officer who was convicted of having committed a “straw purchase.” Abramski had checked the box on the Form 4473 at a licensed retailer in Virginia saying he was the “actual buyer” and then drove to a retailer in Pennsylvania where his uncle filled out the background check form and paid fees, and the transfer was approved. The federal law on “straw purchases” is intended to stop criminal activity or purchases by other prohibited individuals. NSSF is now considering filing an amicus brief in the case in order to obtain guidance that will assist our retailer members.

  • EFFECT OF CONNECTICUT GUN LAWS DISCUSSED ON FOX BUSINESS NEWS . . . Fox Business News anchor Stu Varney interviewed NSSF’s Larry Keane live in-studio last week on Connecticut’s highly restrictive new gun laws that are now going into effect on firearms owners and retailers. Of particular interest was the Oct. 1 implementation of the “ammunition certificate” requirement for ammo purchases. Retailers say many customers are unaware of the requirement, and the new laws are hurting sales. Non residents of Connecticut will be able to obtain an eligibility certificate allowing them to buy ammunition and magazines in the state. However, they will need to travel to the Connecticut State Police headquarters to apply for that certificate in person.

  • STATE WILDLIFE AGENCIES RELY ON PITTMAN-ROBERTSON DOLLARS . . . The 50 state wildlife agencies depend on revenues provided through the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937, usually called the Pittman-Robertson Act. The proceeds of the federal excise taxes collected on firearms, ammunition, and bows and arrows are key in funding programs for wildlife and fish management, species and habitat restoration, land acquisition, habitat protection, scientific research, wildlife population monitoring, hunter and aquatic education, public shooting ranges and access for hunting, fishing and boating. Read more about this ongoing success in this feature from The Outdoor Wire.

  • NSSF RELEASES NEW GRAY WOLVES FACT SHEET . . . Populations of gray wolves in many regions of the United States have recovered beyond expectation. As a result, Congress and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service have taken actions to return management of the no-longer-endangered wolves to the states. Predictably, radical animal-rights activists and fringe environmentalists are now working to reinstate federal authority over gray wolves throughout much of its native range and beyond. To equip you with the facts on this issue, NSSF has released a new fact sheet on gray wolves.

The article reports that Horry County, S.C., officials confirmed Ithaca will build a $6.7 million, 20,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in the Cool Springs Business Park.
