Outdoor Channel Returns as
SHOT Show Pinnacle Sponsor

FOUR YEARS RUNNING . . . For the fourth consecutive year, Outdoor Channel, America's leader in outdoor TV, has committed to a Pinnacle-level sponsorship for NSSF's SHOT Show. “Outdoor Channel’s unprecedented support of the 2014 SHOT Show demonstrates the company’s unwavering commitment to the outdoor industry and all that the industry’s premier trade show stands for,” said Chris Dolnack, NSSF senior vice president and chief marketing officer. The sponsorship includes being the official title sponsor of NSSF’s State of the Industry Event; offering show attendees meet-and-greet access to the network’s top talent; providing on-site information and navigation stations for attendees on the show floor; in addition to network marketing and advertising opportunities surrounding the show. Government Relations

  • HOW GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN WOULD AFFECT NICS AND ATF . . . In the event of a government shutdown on Tuesday, the FBI's NICS Section would remain fully operational and maintain normal business hours. However, ATF's Office of Enforcement Programs and Services (EPS) would effectively be shut down, operating with minimal staff.

  • NSSF LAUDS HOUSE INTRODUCTION OF 2013 SPORTSMEN’S ACT . . . NSSF has issued a press release praising the bipartisan House leadership of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus (CSC) for introducing H.R. 3197, the Sportsmen's Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act of 2013. CSC Co-Chairs, U.S. Reps. Bob Latta (R-Ohio) and Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), joined by Vice-Chairs, U.S. Reps. Rob Wittman (R-Va.) and Tim Walz (D-Minn.), introduced the SHARE Act as a comprehensive package of pro-sportsmen's legislation designed to safeguard and promote America's hunting and fishing traditions. Urge your Congressman to support and co-sponsor the SHARE Act.

  • CALIF. RURAL COUNTY SHERIFFS URGE AB 711 VETO . . . Several California sheriffs from rural counties are among the latest to step forward to urge Gov. Jerry Brown to veto AB 711, the controversial bill that would institute a statewide ban on the use of traditional lead ammunition in hunting. The sheriffs have also urged vetoes of SB 374, the so-called “assault weapons ban,” and AB 180 that would allow the City of Oakland to enact its own gun-registration programs. More than a dozen gun-control measures await Gov. Brown's possible signature. NSSF continues to urge all California sportsmen, gun owners and retailers to contact the governor and urge him to veto AB 711 and all the highly restrictive and unwarranted gun-control bills now on his desk. See the NSSF Legislative Alert.

  • NSSF JOINS SUITS AGAINST MARYLAND, NEW YORK FIREARM ACTS . . . NSSF on Friday joined several federally licensed firearms retailers, associations and others in a legal action against Gov. Martin O’Malley to prevent certain provisions of the Maryland Firearm Safety Act from going into effect starting Oct. 1, 2013. The action seeks to delay enforcement of the act’s prohibition on the acquisition and sale of semiautomatic long guns and standard capacity magazines until the parties have their day in court.  As stated in the motion for a temporary restraining order, the enforcement of the act will impermissibly burden the Second Amendment rights of individuals to defend themselves and cause significant economic harm to FFLs and member businesses. The NSSF also filed a "friend of the court" brief in a New York federal court case challenging the constitutionality of the New York Secure Ammunition Firearms Enforcement Act (SAFE Act). NSSF's brief identifies problems with the SAFE Act, with a focus on the detrimental and devastating impact that it will directly have on NSSF member businesses and the lawful commerce in firearms and ammunition.

  • HSUS IS OUT TO RESTRICT BEAR HUNTING IN MAINE — AGAIN . . . They’re back. The anti-hunting Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is returning to Maine in the group’s latest attempt to restrict hunting seasons and practices. As it did unsuccessfully in 2004, HSUS is again trying to restrict the Maine bear hunt with a ballot question. There is broad-based opposition to the HSUS effort. NSSF is calling on Maine’s hunters and all its friends and allies in the Pine Tree State to oppose this latest attack on America's hunting traditions.

  • ALABAMA COURT RULES FOR FIREARMS RETAILERS . . . An Alabama court last week issued a summary judgment in favor of a firearms retailer based on the Protection in Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. The case began after Joshua Ward, while trying to rob Amanda Evans and her companion, fatally shot the friend and then shot Evans in the head with a handgun. Evans later sued several companies, one of which was Alabama firearms retailer Gulf State Distributors. Gulf States sold the handgun to Ward in 2006 in a legal sale following verification of driver's license and pistol permit, completion of a Form 4473, background check and the green light from NICS. Ward did not have any felony record at the time of the sale. The legal sale was conducted pursuant to state and federal law and was the only connection Gulf States had to Evans.

Ranges/Retailers

  • PREMIUM RETAILER MEMBERSHIP OFFERS 'PEACE OF MIND' . . . The National Shooting Sports Foundation, in creating the Premium Retailer Membership, had one goal: to create a program that would give retailers all of the tools necessary to stay in compliance with ATF regulations and to protect their Federal Firearms License. In other words, NSSF wanted to provide the best “product” possible at the best price possible to give Premium Retailer Members the peace of mind of knowing that NSSF would be there to safeguard their business. Get more information on the Premium Retailer Membership - online or contact Bettyjane Swann, NSSF director, member services, or Samantha Hughes, NSSF member services coordinator.

  • NICS ANNOUNCES EXTENDED HOURS ON BLACK FRIDAY . . . The FBI NICS Section has announced extended hours of service on Friday, Nov. 29, 2013 (“Black Friday”), for E-check Users and state Point-of-Contact (POC) Programs. To accommodate requests to put NICS into service earlier than its usual 8 a.m. start, the FBI will bring NICS in-service starting at 4:30 a.m. E.S.T. for NICS E-check Users and state POCs. NICS Contracted Call Centers will open, as normal, at 8 a.m. EST. Read more about the NICS Black Friday announcement.

SHOT Show

  • SHOT SHOW CREDENTIALING ADVICE . . . Members of the industry who wish to attend the SHOT Show must be credentialed. Membership in NSSF, owner and sponsor of the SHOT Show, does not, however, automatically qualify someone to attend the show. “Everyone must go through the application process,” said Bettyjane Swann, NSSF director, member services, “and they cannot qualify for credentials without providing the proper documentation at the time of the application process at www.shotshow.org.” SHOT Show is a trade event only. The show is not open to the public.

Project ChildSafe

  • CONGRESSMAN BRINGS GUN SAFETY MESSAGE TO FLORIDA . . . Rep. Tom Rooney helped raise awareness about safe gun storage in his district (Fla.-17th) by participating in the kickoff of NSSF's Project ChildSafe program at an event hosted by NSSF and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office last Tuesday in Sun City Center near Tampa. "Proper firearm storage helps prevent tragedies and helps keeps firearms out of the wrong hands," Rooney said. "I want to applaud NSSF for its leadership in promoting firearm safety through its Project ChildSafe program, and reinforce the message that everyone who owns a firearm should respect it and secure it when it’s not in use." NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti, Colonel Donna Lusczynski with the sheriff's department and skeet shooter Dania Vizzi, representing USA Shooting, spoke at the press conference. All stressed the importance of safely storing firearms when not in use, particularly in homes with children. Read story.

  • NSSF INVESTIGATING CREDIT CARD FIRM . . . NSSF is looking into the alleged anti-gun policies of Authorize.net/CyberSource, a subsidiary of the Visa credit card company, after seeing media reports that the company planned to cut off servicing Hyatt Gun Shop of Charlotte, N.C., one of the nation's largest firearms retailers. According to a Washington Examiner story, store owner Larry Hyatt said he recently received an email from the firm saying that he had violated sections of the service agreement that relate to "the sale of firearms or any similar product." NSSF will provide an update about its findings.

  • 60 MINUTES STORY DRIVES HOME THE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE IN MASS SHOOTINGS . . . The CBS news magazine 60 Minutes on Sunday night aired a powerful story examining the paranoid and delusional mental state of young men responsible for recent mass shootings and the long-broken mental healthcare delivery system in this country that failed to protect our communities. Those with the medical mental health credentials must take the lead in fixing this system. As we said in a recent blog posting on this topic, at NSSF our contribution is to lead the effort to FixNICSSM to help ensure that the states send all adjudicated mental health records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

At the OWAA Annual EIC and Honorary Awards Banquet, widely known and respected outdoor communicator Glenn Sapir was honored with the coveted OWAA Excellence in Craft Award. In presenting the award, Jay Cassell said of Sapir, "His service to the organization and professionalism associated with all his works and deeds . . . are legend."
