  • NEW TOOLS TO ENCOURAGE FIREARM SAFETY IN THE HOME . . . NSSF today launched a new Project ChildSafe website as part of its "S.A.F.E. Summer" campaign. The new projectchildsafe.org site as well as the campaign, is designed to focus attention on the importance of safe and responsible firearm storage, to reinforce that anyone who is going to own a firearm should respect it and secure it, and to provide educational resources that can help prevent firearm accidents and misuse. The enhanced site features several new interactive tools to help educate visitors on how to properly store firearms when not in use. Visitors can also make a commitment to be a responsible gun owner. Government Relations

  • CONFIRMATION HEARING FOR ATF DIRECTOR WAS CONTENTIOUS . . . The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee last week held confirmation hearings for B. Todd Jones, the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), who is also U.S. attorney for Minnesota. ATF has not had a full-time director in seven years. President Obama nominated Jones to permanently head the agency five months ago. Jones was closely questioned by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) about a controversial civil case involving the U.S. attorney's office in Minnesota and by Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) regarding the failed "Operation Fast and Furious" effort that allowed guns to go to Mexican drug traffickers.

  • CALIF. SENATE COMMITTEE PASSES TRADITIONAL BAN . . . The California Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water last week passed Assembly Bill 711, putting California one step closer to becoming the first state to completely ban the use of traditional lead ammunition for hunting. The bill will now go to the Senate floor for a vote, having already passed the lower chamber. NSSF joined some 24 organizations representing millions of sportsmen and traditional conservationists nationally and thousands in California in a letter to State Sen. Fran Pavley, chairman of the committee, expressing united opposition to AB 711. NSSF also purchased air time on radio stations in key districts to help persuade legislators to defeat the bill and is closely monitoring developments for possible additional action. All California hunters, target shooters, gun owners and retailers should continue to contact their state senator to express strong opposition to this misguided legislation. More information is available here.

  • TEX., S.D. GOVERNORS GO EAST TO RECRUIT GUN MAKERS . . . Gov. Rick Perry of Texas and Gov. Dennis Daugaard of South Dakota were in Connecticut today recruiting manufacturers to re-locate operations to their more business-friendly states, with Connecticut firearms makers high on the "must-see" list.
Here are some thoughts on the matter from NSSF's Larry Keane.

  • HOUSE BILL TO PREVENT NEW TAXES ON FIREARMS, AMMO . . . NSSF is endorsing H.R. 2361, a bill just introduced by U.S. Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) intended to prevent states and municipalities from enacting or raising taxes or fees on the purchase of firearms or ammunition. "Congressman Graves is to be commended for introducing a bill to prevent one of the latest tactics of anti-gun politicians, that is pricing firearms and ammunition out of reach of responsible, law-abiding Americans through new taxes on the state or local level," said NSSF's Larry Keane.

  • N.C. GOVERNOR SIGNS APPRENTICE HUNTING BILL . . . North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory late last week signed into law legislation that will allow new hunters to go afield under the guidance of a licensed adult mentor before taking a hunter education course. Upon the bill's signing, North Carolina became the 35th state to enact Families Afield legislation. The Families Afield program was established by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and National Wild Turkey Federation to bring a new generation of sportsmen and women to the field. The coalition also receives assistance from the National Rifle Association and Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation. Learn more about Families Afield at www.familiesafield.org.

  • USA SHOOTING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS . . . Last week 23 titles were awarded in both Junior and Open divisions of the USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle and Pistol held in Fort Benning, Ga. Medalists in the Open Olympic disciplines earned spots on the National Team and berths in the upcoming World Cup in Granada, Spain, in July. The top-two Juniors in the Olympic events also earned berths on the National Junior Team. Read USA Shooting's press release on the championships and learn who these new national champions are.
