Sweeping New Gun Control Laws in Connecticut

PASSAGE AND SIGNING DRAWS PRESIDENT OBAMA . . . The Connecticut General Assembly last week passed and Gov. Dannel Malloy quickly signed into law what is being called the toughest package of new gun control laws in the country. This event was cause for President Obama to travel to the state today to speak at an invitation-only event at which he was expected to renew his call for Congress to act on federal gun-control legislation even as prospects appear to be dimming for all measures, save for the possibility of expanded background checks. The complicated legislative package was brought to the floor of both chambers in a single day having been negotiated behind closed doors and without a public hearing. NSSF indicated in an essay in the Hartford Courant that Connecticut's firearms and component manufacturers now face the decision of whether to move all or part of their operations to one of several more gun-friendly states that are inviting them to set up shop. In a statement released following the governor's emotional bill-signing ceremony on Thursday, NSSF pointed out the first of what could be many problems with the now enacted law, namely that the procedure spelled out for conducting the so-called "universal background check" for private party firearms transfers contradicted provisions of federal law. Second Amendment advocates and sportsmen organized by NSSF, NRA and allied organizations brought in hundreds to stand witness to the final floor votes in both chambers of the General Assembly.

  • SPEAKING OUT ON BEHALF OF MANUFACTURERS . . . NSSF President Steve Sanetti sat down on Friday, with CNN reporter Deborah Feyerick for a wide-ranging discussion of firearms issues. So far, one story has aired nationally and on several CNN affiliates on Connecticut's firearms manufacturers and the tough decision they face with regard to possibly moving their operations in light of the highly restrictive laws now enacted in the state. Brief excerpts of this discussion were aired.

  • MALLOY SLANDERS INDUSTRY WITH MALICIOUS REMARKS . . . Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy is apparently done paying lip service to the importance of the gun industry that employs thousands of people in his state. Now he's spreading incendiary rhetoric and flat-out lies about the manufacturers that help keep his state's economy afloat. In an appearance Sunday on CNN's State of the Union, Malloy delivered a slanderous attack on the gun industry. Continue reading at the NSSF Blog.
