U.S. Government Reverses Position
Regarding U.N. Arms Trade Treaty

NSSF OBJECTS TO CHANGE . . . Late last week, the United States government decided to change its approach to the approval process regarding the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty. NSSF issued a press release on this abrupt change in which the NSSF's Larry Keane warned that the move ". . . illustrates that the Obama administration wants a sweeping U.N. Arms Control Treaty . . ." Read more.

Government Relations

  • CRUCIAL WEEK IN CONNECTICUT LEGISLATURE . . . The Connecticut General Assembly is expected to vote this week on a sweeping package of gun-control legislation and may do so without the public getting the opportunity to see or comment on the specific language concerning a ban on modern sporting rifles, magazine capacity restrictions and registration of some previously purchased firearms. NSSF, working both in public and behind the scenes, has been calling on state legislators to focus on solutions to make the state safer that would actually work, including fixing the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) to include all appropriate mental health and other records. All gun owners in the Constitution State should call their state legislators to tell them that fairness and prudence require a full public hearing on the specific legislation they are now considering.

  • DOJ NICS GRANTS: 1,825 DAYS LATE, $803 MILLION DOLLARS SHORT . . . We've all heard the old phrase, "a day late and a dollar short." When we're talking about the federal government, the numbers climb much higher. The U.S. Department of Justice announced that it will be allocating $20 million in grants to improve the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The announcement comes a full five fiscal years after appropriations began to implement the NICS Improvement Amendments of 2007, a law passed by Congress with support from all sides in the gun-control debate, including the gun industry. It was intended to facilitate improvements in the NICS database, primarily by adding records dealing with mental-health disqualifications. Continue reading.

  • NEWSFLASH: JAMES BOND HAS SOME PRETTY ADVANCED GADGETS . . . It's time to set the record straight on the concept of "smart gun" technology. A New York Times op-ed published last weekend misses the mark on several points. Rather than doing the background research, the author chose to demonize the firearms industry and gun owners as technology-hating villains. Read more.

"Increasing interest from retail and wholesale buyers to try out new products makes SHOT Show Buyer Day at the Range a natural fit," said NSSF Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Chris Dolnack. Industry News

  • MORE RECOIL TO GUN-CONTROL LAWS IN COLORADO . . . Last week Bullet Points reported on magazine manufacturer Magpul Industries' promise to move out of the state, saying it will be manufacturing magazines outside of the state within 30 days. This was the company's reaction to restrictive gun-control laws passed in Colorado. The recoil from the governor's signing of the legislation continues to be felt. Two of the most recent examples are the announcement by HiViz Shooting Systems that it, too, will relocate out of state, from its Fort Collins, Colo., facility and the cancelation of the IDPA Regional Championship scheduled for Montrose, Colo.

  • NSSF NAMES KENNEY VICE PRESIDENT, HR AND ADMINISTRATION . . . NSSF's Board of Governors has named Deb Kenney as vice president, human resources and administration. Kenney, who joined NSSF in 1996, previously served as managing director, human resources and administration. "Deb's strategic approach to talent acquisition and development and compensation and benefit management has been instrumental in our growth and success," said NSSF President Steve Sanetti. "Deb also leads our information technology strategy and development. We're fortunate to have someone with her experience and skills in the strategic organizational role here at NSSF." Kenney has earned her certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) from the HR Certification Institute, the credentialing body for human resource professionals. It is affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world's largest organization dedicated exclusively to the human resources profession.

  • SPORTSMAN'S WAREHOUSE ACQUIRES NEW LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT NORTHWEST . . . Midvale, Utah-based Sportsman's Warehouse has recently acquired 10 Wholesale Sports Outdoor Outfitters locations in Oregon, Washington and Montana. The stores, which were purchased from Canadian cooperative United Farmers of Alberta, have been remodeled, restocked and re-opened as Sportsman's Warehouse locations.

  • FIRST SHOTS SECOND ROUND PLANNED FOR SIG SAUER ACADEMY; REMINGTON CONFIRMS CONTINUED SUPPORT OF FIRST SHOTS . . . First Shots, NSSF's introductory shooting program held at independent ranges, has conceived First Shots Second Round, a next step for First Shots participants. SIG SAUER Academy in Epping, N.H., will be hosting a First Shots Second Round event on Sunday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to noon. There, participants will learn the basic skills needed to handle a firearm safely from holster to target and serve as a great introduction to competitive shooting sports like IDPA, USPSA and IPSC. All equipment will be provided. Get someone to register today. Another announcement from the First Shots program reports the commitment from Remington Arms Co. to provide .22 ammunition for all 2013 First Shots rifle and handgun events. "In light of the tremendous demand for ammunition," said Tisma Juett, NSSF manager, First Shots, "this commitment will reassure ranges that they will be able to successfully host First Shots events." Any questions regarding First Shots should be directed to Juett at tjuett@nssf.org.

  • NATIONAL JUNIOR SHOOTING OLYMPIC SHOOTING CHAMPIONSHIPS (NJOSC) BEGIN TOMORROW . . . USA Shooting, America's governing body of Olympic shooting, welcomes junior shooting competitors from across the U.S. to the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs April 2-19 for the 2013 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships. An overwhelming majority of the current National Team competed in a NJOSC event at some time during their careers. Read the USA Shooting press release on NJOSC.

  • EUSEBIO WINS 2013 U.S. STEEL CHAMPIONSHIP . . . KC Eusebio, a member of Team Glock, set a new Main Match Overall Record with his win at the 2013 U.S. National Steel Championship on March 23 in Titusville, Fla. Eusebio shot the match in 76.27 seconds, beating his closest competitor, Max Michel, by almost three seconds--and bettering the previous record set by Eusebio in 2007.

  • COLLEGIATE SHOTGUNNERS WIN SPOTS ON USA SHOOTING TEAM . . . Forty-five collegiate shotgun competitors took to the range at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas, last week to solidify their National Team standing or to earn a coveted spot on the USA Shooting National Development Team.
