at Connecticut State Capitol

NSSF and firearms industry representatives at the press conference in Hartford, Conn.

7,300 JOBS IN STATE . . . Leaders from the National Shooting Sports Foundation and Connecticut-based firearms manufacturers held a press conference today to discuss the important role the industry plays in Connecticut's economy and its willingness to work with the state legislature to be part of the solution in making society safer. More than 100 people, including representatives from every major media outlet in the state, filled Room 1B of the Legislative Office Building at 9 a.m. for today's press conference. "The firearms industry was founded in Connecticut by Eli Whitney. Our industry today still contributes significantly to the Connecticut economy," said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel. "We generate $1.75 billion in economic activity in Connecticut, and are responsible for over 7,300 jobs here in Connecticut." Joining Keane at the press conference were a number of Connecticut-based industry leaders -- Colt's Manufacturing Co. President/CEO Dennis Veilleux, Stag Arms President Mark Malkowski, O.F. Mossberg & Sons Senior Vice President/General Counsel Joe Bartozzi, Sturm, Ruger & Co. General Counsel Kevin Reed, Ammunition Storage Components Owner/President Jonathan Scalise and Savage Sports Corp. President/CEO Ron Coburn -- along with numerous employees of the various businesses. • SEN. FEINSTEIN INTRODUCES BAN ON MODERN SPORTING RIFLES . . . Since the tragic incident that occurred last month in Newtown, Conn., NSSF has been engaged in discussions with lawmakers to find real solutions that will make our children and our communities safer by reducing violence in our society. Unfortunately, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein's (D-Calif.) bill, S. 150, is not a proposal focused on real solutions. Read more on the NSSF Blog.

  • NEW YORK: SUMMARY OF SAFE ACT . . . On Jan. 15, the state of New York adopted the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013 (SAFE Act) as a legislative priority of Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The entire 53-page text of the NY SAFE Act can be found here. A summary of the New York SAFE Act has been provided to NSSF courtesy of the Renzulli Law Firm of White Plains, N.Y. Read the summary.

  • NSSF INTERVENES IN LAWSUIT TO PROTECT RIGHTS OF HUNTERS, SPORTSMEN . . . NSSF has filed a motion to intervene to stop yet another frivolous lawsuit brought by fringe anti-hunting groups led by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Sierra Club to ban the use of traditional ammunition containing lead components. This time the CBD has sued the U.S. Forest Service alleging that the agency has violated federal environmental law by allowing the use of lead ammunition on USFWS-managed public land. Read more.

  • WYOMING LEGISLATION WOULD ALLOW SUPPRESSORS FOR HUNTING . . . Wyoming Sen. Ogden Driskill (R-1) has introduced Senate File 132, a bill that would repeal the state prohibition on hunting with sound suppressors (which are additionally regulated under federal law) while providing additional penalties for those who use them illegally. An identical version of this legislation was introduced earlier in the state House. That bill, however, was defeated last week by a vote that was neither announced nor made public. • N.Y. TIMES'S SLANTED VIEW OF YOUTH SHOOTING SPORTS . . . On the same weekend that President Obama said it was a mistake to dismiss the traditions of gun owners, N.Y. Times reporter Mike McIntire chose to do just that in Sunday's front-page story on the firearms industry's support for youth shooting sports programs. Though hunting and target shooting skills have been passed on with a high degree of safety to new generations for hundreds of years, the industry's research and programs related to introducing youth to recrational shooting were discussed in a condescending, alarmist tone. "There's nothing alarmist or sinister about it," said NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti. Read story.

After the loss to the Ravens, Manning chose hunting to relieve all of the stress and celebrate what had been, perhaps, an MVP season. Read the short article from NFL.com on Manning's hunting adventures with his friend, Colorado Rockies great Todd Helton.
