  • OPTIMIZE YOUR NICS CHECKS . . . The FBI NICS Section reported on Dec. 26, 2012, that since Black Friday, Nov. 23, it had experienced the equivalent of five Black Fridays, that is, more than 155,000 transactions each day. The number of delayed transactions is higher than ever, with only 75 percent of all transactions receiving an immediate determination. As of Dec. 26, the NICS Section's staff has been focusing on the transactions in the delay queue, so that they have an improved chance of reviewing those transactions before the expiration of the third business day. Transactions requiring further review will not immediately be transferred to the FBI NICS Section, but, instead, be automatically placed in delay and worked in the order received. NICS advises that when FFLs conduct background checks, they should not duplicate the transaction by calling the NICS Contracted Call Centers (NCCC) multiple times or calling the NCCC and then doing an E-Check on the same transaction. This will add to the workload and, in turn, will further slow down final status determination from NICS to the FFL.
