Smith & Wesson has signed on to be the presenting sponsor of SHOT Show University, the education seminar for firearms retailers that will take place in conjunction with the 2013 SHOT Show. Additional sponsors of SHOT Show University include Black Rain Ordnance, Celerant Technology Corp., National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW), The Outdoor Connection and SportScanInfo. • TECHNOLOGY HELPS MAXIMIZE SHOT SHOW EXPERIENCE . . . It's essential for anyone attending SHOT Show to do some pre-planning. The My Show Planner online aid can help SHOT attendees plan their schedules in the smartest logistical way possible. This resource will help them navigate the show floor, keep track of appointments and find new products and services, among other conveniences. You can review the entire SHOT Show layout, search for exhibitors, find specials, search for brands and much more. Then you can map out your own schedule and route. Read more at the SHOT Show Blog.

  • 'THE SOCIAL TRADE SHOW': THIRD OF A FOUR-PART SERIES . . . Social media has transformed the way companies market through trade shows. No one knows this better than Traci Browne. The author of "The Social Trade Show" has graciously provided some tips from her book, which are being posted each week to the SHOT Show Blog. Read her latest post for a chance to win a free copy of the book. This week's post: How To Find Potential Customers On Social Media.

Government Relations

  • ILLINOIS HOUSE JOINS SENATE IN OVERRIDE OF GOV. QUINN'S GUN GRAB ATTEMPT . . . NSSF is pleased to report that the Illinois House of Representatives has followed the lead of the State Senate to decisively override Gov. Pat Quinn's "amendatory veto" of a bill to allow the mail-order purchase of ammunition from in-state companies. The original bill will now go into effect in July 2013. To see how representatives voted click here. NSSF reported in an earlier blog post, the governor was attempting an end run of the legislative process with a rewritten bill that would have outlawed many semi-automatic rifles, among other things.

  • ANTI-GUN STATE SENATOR GETS CAUGHT WITH PISTOL AT O'HARE . . . An Illinois state senator representing the south side of Chicago, who recently announced he would seek the Congressional seat vacated by former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., was arrested at O'Hare International Airport Wednesday when TSA personnel found an unloaded .25-caliber pistol and a loaded magazine inside the garment bag he was taking through the security checkpoint. Democrat State Sen. Donne Trotter was charged with felony attempt to board an airplane with a weapon. Trotter told authorities that he had worked a night shift for a security company the night before and had not realized the pistol and magazine were in his bag when he left home on his way to meetings in Washington, D.C. Retailers

  • ONLY A FEW SEATS IN TWO RETAIL SEMINARS REMAIN AVAILABLE . . . Firearms retailers planning to attend the 2013 SHOT Show in Las Vegas apparently realize how valuable the retailer seminars presented at the show are because most seminars being offered on Tuesday, Jan. 15, and all of those on Thursday, Jan.17, have been sold out. A limited number of seats in two Tuesday seminars, however, are still available. Marketing expert Bill Kendy will cover the dos and don'ts of co-op advertising from 1 to 2 p.m. Fifteen-year NICS veteran Kim Brown will follow Kendy from 2:30 to 3:30 by covering the inner workings of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Learn more about these two classes and then register online for these seminars, either by registering for the SHOT Show now or by updating your registration record.

  • JOIN NSSF FOR $35: BENEFITS, SERVICES AND DISCOUNTS FOR MEMBER RETAILERS . . . To celebrate 35 years of NSSF's SHOT Show, NSSF retail/range memberships for a limited time are as low as $35. Retailers can take advantage of this offer while registering for the show or by visiting nssf.org. In addition to all of NSSF's retailer-specific benefits -- including access to ATF compliance consulting, FFL Hotline, NSSF research and more -- retailer members are granted access to a series of NSSF Retail Operational Books created specifically for NSSF's retailer members to help them operate their businesses. In fact, the titles of each end with " . . . for the Firearms Retailer." They are Employment Guide, Financials, How to Write a Business Plan, Merchandising Guide, and, the latest publication, Advertising and Marketing. These operational handbooks are available for free, in PDF format, to all NSSF member retailers.

News of Note

  • SMITH & WESSON SALES UP 48% IN SECOND QUARTER . . . Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. (NASDAQ:SWHC) reported Thursday that second-quarter sales were up 48 percent compared to the same period last year. The company noted strong demand for its M&P modern sporting rifles and pistols.

  • HUNTING: IT'S NOT JUST FOR CONSERVATIVES, ANYMORE . . . Writing for the online news site Slate, essayist Emma Marris writes that "Hunting is undeniably in vogue among the bearded, bicycle-riding, locavore set" -- in other words, environmentally conscious, locally-produced-food-seeking liberals. Yes, we know, there have always been politically liberal hunters, but it's not the media stereotype. "The new trend might even be partly behind a recent 9 percent increase from 2006 to 2011 in the number of hunters in the United States after years of decline," writes Marris. "Many of these new hunters are taking up the activity for ethical and environmental reasons." Read the article.

  • TWENTY SHOTGUN ATHLETES SELECTED FOR 2013 WORLD CUPS . . . Based on shooting performances from the Fall Selection Match in Kerrville, Texas, 20 athletes have been identified to participate in the season's first two International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cups. The first will take place on March 15-24 in Acapulco, Mexico, and the second in the United Arab Emirates, April 16-25. Among the selected shooters is Vincent Hancock, who has taken Olympic gold in Men's Skeet at each of the last two Olympic Games. Read about the entire roster.
