National Hunting & Fishing Day

  • THIS SATURDAY . . . Hunters and shooters -- along with the firearms and ammunition industry -- are among the leading financial contributors to conservation in America, paying for programs that benefit our nation and all its wildlife. Saturday, Sept. 22, is National Hunting and Fishing Day, a day to honor and celebrate the contributions of sportsmen and women. Across the country this weekend Americans will celebrate by attending events, by teaching others about the efforts of sportsmen or simply by enjoying the outdoor traditions they love with the ones they love. Learn more about NHF Day and many events planned around the country this weekend at nhfday.org.

  • VIDEO: HOW HUNTERS AND SHOOTERS CONTRIBUTE . . . The vast majority of conservation funds in this country don't come from the so-called environmental groups, but instead come from the 10 or 11 percent contributions that all hunters and sport shooters make when purchasing firearms and ammunition. Watch and share this video showing how America's unique funding mechanism has pumped more than $7 billion into wildlife restoration, hunter education and shooting and recreational shooting range construction.

  • 75 YEARS OF SUCCESS . . . With NHF Day coming up this Saturday, it's a fitting time to remind all Americans about the important contributions of hunters and shooters to conservation. Everyone should know the story of how America created the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration (WSFR) initiative that has returned many species to abundance. WSFR is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. We follow up last week's profile of the Wood Duck as a symbol of the success of WSFR efforts with another species that was restored to healthy population levels: the Rocky Mountain Elk. If you have ever purchased firearms or ammunition, you are part of this great conservation story that every sportsman and woman should know and pass on to others.

Government Relations

  • NSSF TO INTERVENE IN SUIT BROUGHT BY CBD . . . NSSF plans to intervene in a lawsuit being brought against the U.S. Forest Service by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Sierra Club in U.S. District Court in Arizona that makes the claim that hunters' use of traditional ammunition amounts to a "disposal of a solid or hazardous waste that presents an imminent and substantial endangerment to health [and] the environment." The Kaibab National Forest is the immediate jurisdiction at issue, but if the CBD and Sierra Club win under the legal theory being tested there, then the plaintiffs could succeed in banning hunting and shooting everywhere in the country. In their suit they claim condors need protection from hunters' traditional ammunition. Last month, however, the supposed science underlying California's traditional ammunition ban was called in to serious question at a California Fish & Game Commission hearing by Dr. Don Saba, who demonstrated serious flaws and the misuse of scientific data in the studies blaming traditional ammunition for lead poisoning of condors.

  • A LOSS FOR YOUTH SHOOTING SPORTS IN INDIANA . . . Ron Mason, who helped get the Scholastic Clay Target Program off the ground in Indiana, passed away on Thursday. Mason was a key player in SCTP's success in Indiana. As SCTP's volunteer Indiana state skeet director, he recruited gun clubs to implement SCTP and organized SCTP state shoots. He coached many SCTP teams over the years, winning national championships, and was selected to attend the Junior Olympic Development Camp to advance his skills as a coach. NSSF offers a big thanks to Ron Mason and his family. He will be missed.
