Romney Taps Ryan as Running Mate

PRO-GUN AVID HUNTER . . . Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's choice of Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his vice presidential running mate should be well received by sportsmen across the United States. Ryan is an avid hunter and is the former co-chairman of Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, the largest and most bi-partisan caucus in Congress. He understands and appreciates the issues hunters and sportsmen care about, such as the effort to ban the online and mail-order sale of ammunition and President Obama's support for banning modern sporting rifles (MSRs). Ryan has received an "A" by the NRA for his overall voting record. Among other things, he has voted to protect the right of hunters to use traditional ammunition and to prohibit suing manufacturers and retailers for the criminal misuse of firearms. He has also supported a national cross-state standard for concealed carry. Read more on the NSSF Blog.

Government Relations

  • UPDATE: CALIFORNIA BILL . . . California Senate Bill 249 was recently amended to change the definition of what constitutes a detachable magazine for a semi-automatic firearm, potentially making an estimated one million semi-automatic rifles legally sold in that state for the last decade "illegal to possess" on July 1, 2013. This legislation could result in owners having to surrender or face confiscation of their currently California-compliant semi-automatic rifles and would take effect despite there being no meaningful statistical connection between these firearms and crime. In fact, crime has continued to decline in the state while these firearms have been legal to own. NSSF is actively monitoring the progress of this legislation for the benefit of its members and the huge number of law-abiding California firearms owners that could be adversely affected by this solution in search of a problem. Read NSSF's Legislative Alert.

  • APPELLATE COURT TAKES UP MULTIPLE SALES REPORTING CASE . . . Last week, the NSSF filed its opening brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals D.C. Circuit seeking to overturn a lower court's erroneous denial of its lawsuit challenging ATF's unlawful demand that law-abiding firearm retailers report multiple sales of certain semi-automatic rifles. Joining NSSF in challenging ATF's authority are NRA-backed firearm retailers J&G Sales, Ltd. and Foothills Firearms, LLC that filed their own opening brief with the court on the same day.

  • NSSF AT STATE LEGISLATORS CONFERENCE . . . The National Conference of State Legislatures, a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the nation's 50 states, held its annual meeting Aug. 6-9 in Chicago. As it does each year, NSSF attended the conference and discussed with legislators many of the key issues affecting the industry, including traditional ammunition, modern sporting rifles, the industry's economic impact and the Don't Lie for the Other Guy program. This event offers NSSF the opportunity to represent its members' interest at the state level. Pictured left to right at the NSSF booth are Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel; Jake McGuigan, NSSF director of government relations - state affairs; and Mike Bazinet, NSSF director of public affairs.

  • ILLEGAL BOYCOTT IDEA SURFACES AGAIN, CHAMPIONED BY SPITZER . . . Writing on Slate.com last week, the disgraced former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer -- whose lawsuit while he was Attorney General against the entire firearms industry was summarily dismissed 12 years ago -- again suggested that government entities get together to illegally boycott firearms manufacturers. This time, Spitzer suggests the federal government, the city of New York and the Bloomberg-funded Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG), get together and use their market purchasing power to boycott firearms manufacturers unless the manufacturers agree to stop selling to the public both ammunition magazines "with more than 10 bullets" and, even more unbelievably, "semi-automatic" firearms, of any kind -- the very issue in the Heller and McDonald cases decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. Recognizing these needs, NSSF has awarded $399,456 in grants to 16 shooting ranges to develop programs that will put more people on the firing line. Read more.

Brad Rowse was a young man who was instrumental in the establishment of the National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucuses but whose sudden death shocked the legislative and sportsmen's community.
