A Great Day for the Shooting Sports

KIM RHODE MAKES US PROUD . . . One news story called Kim Rhode the "greatest U.S. Olympian ever" after she made history on Sunday by capturing the gold medal in women's skeet shooting. Some may argue the point, but in Kim's camp are millions of recreational shooters and members of America's firearms and ammunition industry who could not be more proud of the 33-year-old Californian. Kim stands alone as the only American to win individual medals in five straight Olympic Games. That journey began with a gold medal as a 16 year old in Atlanta in 1996 and was bookended yesterday by a golden, near-perfect effort in which she hit 99 out of 100 targets, including 25 straight in the final round. Kim's accomplishment is all the more remarkable because her sport of women's double trap, in which she also medaled in 2000 (Sydney, bronze) and 2004 (Athens, gold), was eliminated from the Olympics. A true competitor, Kim made the challenging switch to skeet and won a silver medal in 2008 in Beijing. Yesterday, Kim's great performance received widespread media coverage, giving the shooting sports prime-time exposure -- including live coverage of the event by MSNBC and appearance this morning on NBC's Today Show. See NBC's coverage and the "greatest" story.

  • USA SHOOTERS IN LONDON . . . Despite several good performances, medals have eluded U.S. Shooting Team members except for Kim Rhode's gold, but that could change tomorrow. Vincent Hancock and Frank Thompson are in position to medal in men's skeet. Here's a rundown of U.S. performances so far. In women's 10m air rifle, Jamie Gray finished fifth and Sarah Scherer seventh. In men's 10m air pistol, Daryl Szarenski (23rd) and Jason Turner (34th) did not qualify for the finals. In women's 10m air pistol, Sandra Uptagrafft (28th) did not reach the finals. In men's 10m air rifle, Jonathan Hall (27th) and Matt Emmons (35th) did not qualify for the finals. Emmons, a gold and silver medalist in two previous Olympic Games in the 50m rifle prone event, will also compete in the 50m rifle three-position event later in the Games. United Nations

  • ARMS TRADE TREATY TALKS CONCLUDE . . . The United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (U.N. ATT) talks concluded last week without a draft treaty being agreed to by member nations. NSSF will continue to closely monitor arms control discussions at the United Nations. The U.S. State Department said that it will support a new round of negotiations in 2013. The Sporting Arms & Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI) pointed out in testimony at the UN that the treaty language lacked a "comprehensive view of firearms trade and use."

SHOT Show at 35

Former Texas Governor John Connally (center right) joins St. Louis Mayor John Conway in cutting the ribbon to officially open the first SHOT Show on January 19, 1979.

For those who have been there from the beginning, it may be hard to believe that 2013 will mark the 35th SHOT Show. Throughout the year we'll be looking back at the show's history, from its inception in 1978 and its official opening in 1979, up to where it stands today as one of the largest and most vibrant trade shows in the world.

  • ST. LOUIS, 1979: A LOOK BACK AT THE FIRST SHOT SHOW . . . On Jan. 19, 1979, at the opening ceremonies of the first SHOT Show, Bill Talley, chairman of the NSSF Board of Governors, remarked, "This show, soon to open, is the realization of a dream of many years. We've long wanted a forum for products allied with hunting and shooting, and now we have it. The support and enthusiasm you have all displayed has been extremely encouraging, and we know that this will be an important beginning for an annual event of growing influence." Prophetic words, indeed. Read more on the SHOT Show Blog.
