2012 SHOT SHOW . . . Ready or not, it's here. The National Shooting Sports Foundation's 2012 SHOT Show will open its doors next Tuesday, Jan. 17, in Las Vegas. Nearly 60,000 firearms industry professionals will make their way to the Sands Expo and Convention Center to get a first look at the new products and services they hope will excite customers in 2012. The largest trade show of its kind in the world, the SHOT Show attracts buyers from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Manufacturers and distributors display a broad range of products, including firearms, ammunition, optics, reloading, locks and cases, shooting range equipment, targets, training and safety equipment, hunting accessories, law enforcement and tactical equipment, hearing and eye protection, tree stands, scents and lures, cutlery, GPS systems, holsters, apparel, leather goods, game calls and decoys.

  • FOLLOW THE SHOW ONLINE . . . Anyone with an interest in the SHOT Show is encouraged to follow along online throughout the show for live updates, including news, videos, photos, links to other sites providing coverage and more.   • WHAT'S TRENDING? SHOT SHOW . . . With the SHOT Show just a week away, the online conversation about the show is growing each day on sites like Twitter and Facebook. According to data pulled by NSSF and Radian6, common words associated with the show have been Vegas, products, guns, hunting, excited, booth and many others. Click the conversation cloud at right to see the topics making their way into the SHOT Show-related conversation online. The time period for this report is Jan. 2-8.

  • PRESS CONFERENCE ON FIREARM SALES . . . NSSF will hold a press conference at the SHOT Show regarding industry indicators on current firearm sales trends, particularly the positive sales outlook for 2012 following a record-setting year in 2011. It will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 18, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Press Conference Room (Room 3306, Venetian Hotel, Level 3, adjacent to NSSF Press Room). Learn more.

  • BUDWEISER TO NAME CONSERVATIONIST OF YEAR . . . This year's Budweiser Conservationist of the Year Award winner will be announced at the SHOT Show on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 5 p.m. in the show's Press Room. The NSSF Press Room is located in the Venetian Hotel, Murano Ballroom. In addition, Budweiser will be hosting a happy hour in the Press Room for registered media only from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

  • NARDELLI NAMED REMINGTON CEO . . . Bob Nardelli has been named CEO of Remington Arms Co. Said John Blystone, chairman of parent company Freedom Group, "Over the past 15 months, under Bob Nardelli's strong leadership, Freedom Group has enhanced its operational capabilities and is now positioned to focus on customers with renewed intensity on technology and product development. We are most fortunate to have one of the top business leaders of his generation at the helm of this iconic American company." Read the company's press release.

  • NSSF'S DOLNACK AMONG TOP 100 CMOs ON TWITTER . . . Social Media Marketing magazine has named its top 100 chief marketing officers on Twitter and among them is NSSF Senior Vice President and CMO Chris Dolnack. According to the magazine, "These are the top 100 CMOs around the world who, 1.) provide useful content, 2.) consistently engage with their followers, 3.) truly "get it" when it comes to the best ways to use Twitter and other forms of social media and 4.) were active on Twitter as of Jan. 9, 2012."   • 'GUNS CREATE JOBS' . . . "In New Hampshire, the gun issue isn't just about the Second Amendment and freedom. More than 2,000 state residents are employed by firearms and defense-related manufacturers," reads an op-ed posted by The Daily Caller last week. Read the op-ed, authored by Michael Hudome and Paul Erhardt.

  • ATK SECURITY AND SPORTING ANNOUNCES NEW ACCESSORIES DIVISION . . . ATK has announced plans to form a new division inside of its Security and Sporting Group that will be led by former Vice President of Sales and Business Development Anthony Acitelli. ATK said the creation of this division will help the company broaden its presence and increase growth in the accessories market.

  • NSSF PAC AT SHOT SHOW . . . The New Hampshire Republican primary is Tuesday, which means this critically important election year is well underway. The NSSF PAC invites NSSF corporate members to stop by the NSSF Membership Booth (No. L221) during the 2012 SHOT Show to complete their prior approval forms. Companies granting the NSSF PAC written approval will receive important PAC news and alerts as well as information about how they can promote, protect and preserve their businesses and our industry during this election year. Member companies that would like to submit their prior approval form before the show can download it here and return it to Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF PAC Treasurer, by email nssfpac@nssf.org or fax 203-426-7182.

  • ATTORNEY GENERAL HOLDER TO TESTIFY BEFORE HOUSE COMMITTEE . . . Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) has announced that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will testify on Feb. 2 before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee about his role and that of the Department of Justice (DOJ) in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' "Operation Fast and Furious." Soon after Issa's announcement, the DOJ supplied congressional investigators with 482 pages of subpoenaed internal documents relevant to the "Fast and Furious" investigation.

  • FELON'S ACCIDENTAL-SHOOTING LAWSUIT THROWN OUT OF COURT . . . The Massachusetts Appellate Court has upheld a trial court's decision to dismiss a case involving an ex-con who stole a homeowner's firearm and accidentally shot and killed himself with it. The administrator of the ex-con's estate attempted to sue both the homeowner and Glock. The case was dismissed under the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA).

  • ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A _________ . . . During the holiday season, many Americans were proud to announce via social media what brand of firearm they desired or received for Christmas. NSSF asked social media monitoring service Radian6 to search public social media posts containing the keywords "Christmas," "firearm or gun" and firearm manufacturers' names. This chart shows the top ten manufacturers mentioned from outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, blogs, YouTube and other social media sites.

  • UPDATED FIREARMS-RELATED INJURY STATISTICS REPORT AVAILABLE . . . NSSF research has updated the Firearms-Related Injury Statistics Industry Intelligence Report with the most recent figures from sources such as the National Safety Council and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This report provides an overview of unintentional firearms-related fatalities and general safety statistics. NSSF members that log in at nssf.org/members may access this and other reports by clicking NSSF Industry Research and then Industry Intelligence Reports.
