NSSF Seeks State Agency Proposals for Hunting Heritage Partnership Grants

TEN YEARS, $4.8 MILLION IN FUNDING . . . The National Shooting Sports Foundation is now accepting proposals from state and regional wildlife agencies for Hunting Heritage Partnership (HHP) grants. In its tenth year of helping agencies fund projects that create new and expanded opportunities for hunting, NSSF has awarded 109 grants to 38 state agencies and one regional association. For this new 2012-2013 grant period, the Hunting Heritage Partnership program will make up to $500,000 available to agencies for qualifying projects, bringing the grand total of awards to approximately $4.8 million since HHP was started in 2003. All proposals for consideration are due to NSSF by Feb. 1, 2012. Projects must begin by March 1, 2012.

  • HOLIDAY FIREARM SALES UP . . . Like many retailers, NSSF member Guns and Leather in Tennessee has seen an increase in firearm sales this holiday season. Store owner Dennis Williams, who recently opened a second location, told his local ABC News affiliate that Black Friday sales at his store jumped 300 percent compared to last year.   • SHOT SHOW AUCTION . . . The GLOCK "Statue of Liberty Gun" (pictured at right), a Winchester Model 1892 Takedown rifle hand-engraved by Rob Bunting and two original Ross Tyser knives have been selected as this year's official SHOT Show auction items. Each of these is now up for auction on GunBroker.com, where they can be viewed and bid upon until 1 p.m. on Jan. 20, the closing day of the 2012 SHOT Show. The SHOT Show auction is administered by the Hunting Heritage Trust for NSSF. All proceeds from the auction will benefit programs to further America's hunting and shooting sports heritage.

  • GEN. CASEY ELECTED TO COLT DEFENSE BOARD . . . Gen. George W. Casey Jr., U.S. Army (ret.), has been elected to the governing board of Colt Defense. Gen. Casey served as chief of staff of the U.S. Army for four years, from April 2007 to April 2011. Previously, he was commander, Multinational Force-Iraq, from July 2004 to February 2007. Said Gerald Dinkel, Colt Defense president and CEO, "His experience and success as a military leader in the most challenging and complex environments makes him an ideal person to contribute to our strategic planning, business execution and overall corporate governance."

  • SHOT BUSINESS DECEMBER ISSUE . . . The latest issue of SHOT Business magazine is now available online at shotbusiness.com. In this issue, the magazine takes a look at the improved accuracy of modern factory rifles. Another article, "Behind the Counter," focuses on the importance of hiring the right salespeople for your store. Also find the most recent news briefs, what's selling where, ATF Q&A, what's new from NSSF and much more.

  • NSSF'S CAULEY NAMED TO IAEE TASK FORCE . . . Diedra Cauley, NSSF director of exhibitions and conferences, has been named to the International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) Job Analysis Task Force. The task force will work in an advisory role as IAEE conducts a job analysis of the exhibitions and events industry.

  • FIREARMS AND COMMERCE REPORT . . . ATF last week released its updated report, Firearms Commerce in the United States 2011, which contains information about domestic firearms manufacturing, as well as the importation and exportation of firearms. The guide is posted at www.atf.gov.

  • ATF/INDUSTRY VETERANS OPEN IMPORT/EXPORT CONSULTING BUSINESSES . . . Two ATF/industry veterans have each recently moved on to new phases in their careers: consulting businesses. After retiring from ATF recently, 35-year veteran Larry White has established an import consulting business, Arms Trade Solutions. White started his career with ATF in 1976, spending the past 19 years in the imports arena, most recently as industry liaison/analyst for the Firearms and Explosives Services Division. Another industry veteran, Kim Pritula, now serves as president of KMP Global Consulting, which provides guidance and expertise to firearms industry companies on export compliance, export sales and ATF compliance. Pritula has more than 25 years of experience in the field, most recently serving as Sturm, Ruger's director of export/ATF compliance and security. She can be contacted at 603-382-8974.

  • FOREIGN CORRUPT PRACTICES ACT COMPLIANCE TRAINING ONLINE . . . Small and midsize companies are just as likely to be investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice for Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) violations as large, multinational corporations. The penalties for violating the FCPA are too great not to take NSSF's free Global Anti-Corruption online training course. You'll need your member ID and password, so if you've forgotten both or either, please email Samantha Hughes, NSSF member services coordinator, at shughes@nssf.org.

  • 'RESTORING THE REPUTATION OF ATF' . . . J.J. Green, national security correspondent for WTOP in Washington, D.C., recently interviewed Interim ATF Director B. Todd Jones about his first 90 days on the job. Read and listen to the interview here.

  • CLAIM YOUR SPOT AT 2012 SHOOTING INDUSTRY MASTERS . . . Dates have been announced -- July 20-21 -- and information and entry forms are online for FMG Publications' 2012 Shooting Industry Masters, to be held once again at the Rockcastle Shooting Center at the Park Mammoth Resort in Park City, Ky. The 10th annual match offers both premier shooting venues and networking opportunities for a combination of fun and business-building, all the while benefitting First Shots, NSSF's successful introductory shooting program.

  • WATCHDOG SITE ENCOURAGES AMERICANS TO BE WARY OF HSUS . . . Watchdog site HumaneWatch.org has released a 30-second ad encouraging Americans to be wary of the Humane Society of the United States' fundraising practices. "You should know that only one penny of every dollar donated goes to local pet shelters," the ad says. ". . . If you want to help pet shelters this holiday season, make sure you give to your local animal shelter." The ad is airing nationally.

  • NATIONAL PHEASANT FEST & QUAIL CLASSIC IN FEBRUARY . . . The nation's biggest event for pheasant and quail hunters will take place in Kansas City Feb. 17-19 when Pheasants Forever's and Quail Forever's National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic is presented by Cabela's. Hundreds of outdoor exhibitors, hunting how-to seminars and a Landowner Habitat Help Room offering a free wildlife habitat plan for individual landowners highlight the fest's offerings.   • NSSF SURVEY TRACKER . . . The NSSF Survey Tracker is a monthly monitoring service utilizing an online panel of active hunters and target shooters. View the latest edition--November 2011. Sourced by Southwick Associates' HunterSurvey.com, each report features: Market Snapshot--purchases made in the past month along with top-selling brands; Market Leaders--the top brands purchased in different retail categories; and Question of the Month--insight into opinions and attitudes of today's recreational hunters and target shooters. This month's questions pertain to hunting license purchases. Log in to the members section of the NSSF website to view the tracker.

  • NATIONWIDE SURVEY SHOWS SUPPORT FOR HUNTING AND SHOOTING . . . Providing new findings that agree with several decades worth of data, a recent nationwide survey found wide approval of hunting and shooting among Americans. The study, conducted for NSSF by Responsive Management, found that more than seven in ten Americans approve of legal hunting and legal recreational shooting. Such results indicate that Americans' attitudes toward these activities have remained consistent over the past 15 years, with approval and support continuing to greatly outweigh disapproval and opposition.
