News of Note

It's Almost Here

2012 SHOT SHOW . . . Believe it or not, the National Shooting Sports Foundation's 2012 SHOT Show -- the industry's largest annual trade show -- is less than two months away. As the entire industry prepares, enthusiasm is already building for what promises to be one of the best events in the show's history. If you haven't already done so, register today at shotshow.org. Also, be sure to take advantage of all the show's offerings like retailer and law enforcement seminars, the State of the Industry Dinner, SHOT Show University, Media Day at the Range and more. Stay up to date on show news through the SHOT Show Blog and connect with the show on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

  • EXHIBITORS: RESERVE PRESS ROOM BINS; MEDIA DAY UPDATE . . . A popular new addition to last year's SHOT Show Press Room were the bins used to display exhibitor press materials. The bins are back for the 2012 show and can be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis with a maximum of two bins per exhibitor. The deadline to reserve bins is Jan. 6. To be eligible, you must be either a SHOT Show exhibitor or NSSF media member. Also, there is very limited exhibitor space left for Media Day at the Range, which will be held Jan. 16 at the Boulder City Pistol and Rifle Range. Learn more about it at media-day.com.

Where Will Things Stand in 50 Years?

NSSF President Steve Sanetti, left, and Communications Director Bill Brassard unveil the time capsule at NSSF headquarters in Newtown, Conn.

  • TIME CAPSULE CAPS NSSF ANNIVERSARY YEAR . . . This month a half century ago, NSSF was incorporated and, therefore, it seems an appropriate time to announce the last event associated with its 50th anniversary year. NSSF has packed a time capsule with materials that reflect the state of firearms ownership in 2011 and how NSSF has promoted, protected and preserved hunting and the shooting sports since 1961. For those who eventually open the repository, the contents will provide a benchmark against which to measure how our firearms freedoms and the $4 billion firearms industry have fared over time. Read more about the time capsule's contents.

Government Relations

  • HOUSE PASSES NATIONAL RIGHT-TO-CARRY BILL . . . Right-to-carry permit holders moved a step closer to being able to carry concealed firearms outside their home states when the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 822, the National Right to Carry Reciprocity Act, by a vote of 272 to 154. NSSF supported the NRA-backed bill, which was introduced by Reps. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.). A Senate version of the bill has yet to be introduced. Read more.

  • HUNTING AND FISHING ACT GAINS COMMITTEE SUPPORT . . . By a vote of 28-13, the House Natural Resources Committee passed H.R 2834, the Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage Opportunities Act. NSSF thanks all hunters, sportsmen, gun owners and firearms enthusiasts who urged their representatives to support the legislation. The act would require federal public land management officials, in cooperation with the respective state and fish and wildlife agency, to consider facilitating and providing access for hunting, recreational shooting and fishing when federal public land use is being planned.

  • LAWSUIT CHALLENGES DEFINITION OF 'ASSAULT WEAPONS' . . . A lawsuit challenging California's assault-weapons ban was filed last week in a California federal court against California Attorney General Kamala Harris, the California Department of Justice and Sonoma County law-enforcement officials. The lawsuit -- filed by a former U.S. Marine and Iraq combat veteran and joined by the Second Amendment Foundation and Calguns Foundation -- seeks to have the state's definition of "assault weapons" declared unconstitutionally vague. There is a tremendous amount of misinformation surrounding so-called "assault weapons." Read NSSF's fact sheet to separate fact from fiction.

The Range Report

  • FOOD SERVICE: SOME RANGES HAVE BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL WITH IT . . . The most recent issue of The Range Report magazine features an article for shooting ranges looking to add food service at their facility. Opening an eating establishment is easier said than done, but some ranges have done it successfully. Their examples provide important ideas and guidelines for other ranges that are considering adding food to their offerings. Read the entire fall issue of The Range Report online at nssf.org/ranges.

News of Note

  • NSSF SPONSORS HONORED AMERICAN VETERANS AFIELD . . . Joining dozens of its member companies in supporting HAVA's mission to assist disabled veterans and active duty military wounded in their reintegration into civilian life, NSSF has announced a multi-year support program for Honored American Veterans Afield and the appointment of NSSF Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Chris Dolnack to the HAVA Board of Directors. Read more.

  • RUGER JUMPS TO NO. 21 ON FORBES' LIST OF BEST SMALL COMPANIES . . . Sturm, Ruger & Co. jumped 52 spots to No. 21 on Forbes magazine's list of "America's 100 Best Small Companies" in 2011. The magazine listed Ruger at No. 73 on last year's list.

  • POTTERFIELDS' $900,000 DONATION . . . MidwayUSA's Larry and Brenda Potterfield recently donated $900,000 to the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation, another sizeable investment in the future of shooting. SSSF, which oversees the NSSF-developed Scholastic Clay Target Program, works to introduce school-age youths to the shooting sports. SCTP's growth over the past decade has been remarkable. The program has drawn comparisons to Little League, and it has introduced thousands of young Americans to the fun and excitement of the shooting sports. Learn more at shootsctp.org.

  • FREEDOM GROUP ANNOUNCES THIRD QUARTER RESULTS . . . Freedom Group Inc. reported third-quarter net income of $2.4 million, compared to a loss of $400,000 during the same period last year. Revenue was $198 million, down 5 percent from $207.6 million in the third quarter of 2010. Based in Madison, N.C., the Freedom Group of companies includes Remington, Bushmaster, DPMS/Panther Arms, Marlin, H&R, NEF, Dakota Arms, LC Smith, Parker, AAC, Barnes Bullets, EOTAC, INTC and Mountain Khakis.

  • THIS THANKSGIVING, MANY ARE THANKFUL FOR HUNTERS' GENEROSITY . . . Just a reminder that when you're passing the turkey and stuffing around the Thanksgiving dinner table, here's a story to tell -- one that would not be possible without the thoughtfulness and generosity of hunters. A new study reveals that last year 11 million meals were provided to the less fortunate through donations of venison by hunters. Nearly 2.8 million pounds of game meat made its way to shelters, food banks and church kitchens and onto the plates of those in need. Read more.

NSSF History Snapshot

Throughout its 50th anniversary year, NSSF each week will be spotlighting various moments from the Foundation's history.

  • RALLYING CRY . . . Former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.) provided a rallying cry in a speech to SHOT Show attendees that encouraged industry leaders to become politically active, saying, "In politics, you have a choice: take part . . . or get taken apart." NSSF heeded the advice and became politically active by developing its government relations and voter-education mobilization efforts. Learn more at nssf.org/50.
