SHOT Show

Sunday Hunting Prohibition in Pennsylvania

FINAL COMMITTEE HEARING THIS THURSDAY . . . The Pennsylvania House of Representatives Game and Fisheries Committee will hold its third and final public hearing on Thursday, Oct. 27, beginning at 9 a.m. in Room 140 of the Main Capitol Building in Harrisburg. This will be the last opportunity for Sunday hunting advocates to make their voices heard. NSSF along with the Sunday Hunting Coalition is urging all sportsmen to come out and show their support for the removal of this antiquated blue law. Expanding Sunday hunting could bring an estimated 8,190 new Pennsylvania jobs, paying more than $245 million in wages. The overall economic impact on Pennsylvania could be to the tune of more than $764 million annually. Read more at the NSSF Blog.

Government Relations

  • NSSF TO FILE AMICUS BRIEF . . . In response to a ruling by a federal judge in the Northern District of Texas in favor of the federal government in a case brought by the NRA challenging the federal restriction on the purchase of handguns by 18-20 year old adults, NSSF plans to file a friend-of-the-court brief in support of NRA's appeal of the ruling. In the case, Jennings v. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the NRA and a group of responsible young adults argued that since 18-20 year olds are considered adults for virtually every other purpose, such as voting and military service, adults in this age group should also be able to purchase handguns from licensed retailers. A similar case, in which many of the same plaintiffs challenge the state of Texas' ban on issuance of right-to-carry permits to adults under 21, remains pending in the same court.

  • LAW ENFORCEMENT GROUP FOR TRADITIONAL AMMUNITION BILL . . . The National Fraternal Order of Police has sent letters to the Senate and House sponsors and co-sponsors of the "Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Protection Act" (S. 838, H.R. 1558). This bipartisan legislation being championed by NSSF will clarify the longstanding exemption of ammunition and ammunition components under the Toxic Substance Control Act. The letter, points out that if traditional ammunition, which contains lead core components, were banned, law enforcement would face serious budget impacts because alternatives are more expensive. Also, ammunition containing harder metals such as steel could not be used because such rounds are capable of penetrating soft body armor and are prohibited by federal law.

  • HUNTING ACCESS REPORT . . . Research indicates that difficulty gaining access to lands for hunting has become a constraint to recruiting and retaining sportsmen. Adequate access to land is one of the fundamental issues that affect the future of hunting, but it is also an issue over which agencies and organizations have some influence. To gain a better understanding of the specific problems that affect hunter access to both public and private lands, the National Shooting Sports Foundation and Responsive Management completed a nationwide scientific survey and project on issues related to hunting access in which more than 14,000 hunters nationwide were asked their opinions on a variety of access-related topics.
