SHOT Show

First Shots to Kick Off Big City Tour

CHICAGO, MADISON AREAS IN NOVEMBER . . . The National Shooting Sports Foundation and eight shooting facilities in greater Chicago and Madison, Wis., are sponsoring First Shots seminars Saturday, Nov. 5, to introduce residents to safe and responsible handgun ownership. With Chicago residents now able to exercise their Second Amendment rights following the Supreme Court's McDonald decision and with Wisconsin becoming the 49th state to permit concealed carry, the two cities are naturals to kick off NSSF's Big City Tour of First Shots. Future seminars are slated for Miami and Sacramento. Read the Chicago and the Madison releases that list participating ranges.   • FIREARM RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY FORUM IN SOUTH DAKOTA . . . NSSF will be presenting at the second Firearm Research and Technology Forum in Rapid City, S.D., on Thursday. According to Gov. Dennis Daugaard, the goals of the forum are to identify opportunities for the state's firearm industry to expand and to cultivate relations between industry-related companies and South Dakota schools.   • NEW WINCHESTER PLANT OPENS IN MISSISSIPPI . . . Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and officials with Olin Corp., the parent of Winchester, cut the ribbon Wednesday on the new Centerfire ammunition manufacturing operations in Oxford, Miss., the Associated Press reports. About 1,000 people are expected to eventually be employed at the plant when it reaches its production capacity over the next five years. The decision to move the plant from East Alton, Ill., to Oxford was announced in November 2010.

  • U.S. MARINE CORPS ISSUES PRODUCTION DELIVERY ORDER TO HK . . . Heckler & Koch was awarded a competitive contract to produce the U.S. Marine Corps' new Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR). The formal "Full Rate Production" announcement by the Marines caps a competition that began more than three years ago. Read more.

  • DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR . . . Despite rumors to the contrary, Cerberus, the private equity firm that owns Freedom Group, a holding company that includes firearms manufacturers Remington, Marlin, Bushmaster and DPMS, is in no way tied to anti-gun activist George Soros.

  • AUGUST U.S. IMPORTS UP 2 PERCENT . . . NSSF reports that overall U.S. imports (in units) in six sporting arms and ammunition categories increased 2 percent in August compared to August 2010. August 2011 imported units in tracked categories totaled 146.2 million, up from 143.3 million reported in August 2010. See a complete breakdown of each category's August import data.

  • SPORTSMEN PURCHASES REMAIN STEADY . . . A look at the buying habits of sportsmen in 2011 compared to the previous year reveals purchases of hunting and fishing equipment have remained steady in the current year, and in fact, even slightly improved. Read more from Southwick Associates.

  • ACT NOW TO END SUNDAY HUNTING PROHIBITION IN PENNSYLVANIA . . . The Pennsylvania House Game and Fisheries Committee will hold its third and final public hearing on Thursday, Oct. 27, beginning at 9 a.m. in Room 140 of the Main Capitol Building in Harrisburg, Pa. NSSF along with the Sunday Hunting Coalition is urging all sportsmen to come out and show their support for the removal of this antiquated blue law. NSSF has sent this call to action to every firearms retailer in the state urging their customers to support the repeal and take action by calling committee members. Expanding Sunday hunting could have a tremendous economic impact on Pennsylvania to the tune of more $764 million annually.

  • NATIONAL RIGHT-TO-CARRY BILL MOVING FORWARD . . . The House Judiciary Committee last week considered amendments to H.R. 822, the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011. All proposed anti-gun amendments were defeated. The National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity bill is bipartisan legislation introduced earlier this year by Reps. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.). H.R. 822 will allow law-abiding firearm carry permit holders to exercise their right to self-defense while traveling outside their home state.

  • ARREST MADE IN SHOT SHOW RESERVATION SCAM . . . NSSF has learned that the Nevada Attorney General's Office arrested an individual for allegedly running a hotel room reservation scam on unsuspecting SHOT Show exhibitors and attendees. Read more about it on the SHOT Show Blog.

  • 6 MILLION ACRES . . . The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has recorded its 6 millionth acre of habitat protected or enhanced for elk and other wildlife. The official 6 millionth acre recorded was part of an RMEF-funded 560-acre prescribed burn at Devil's Canyon on BLM lands near Cody, Wyo.   • PAN AMERICAN GAMES UNDER WAY IN MEXICO . . . The USA Shooting Team is competing this week at 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. The team is off to a great start, winning two medals and one quota the first day of competition. The team secured a pistol quota that enables the USA Shooting Team to send two Men's 10m Air Pistol athletes to the London Olympic Games in 2012. Get the latest results at usashooting.org.

  • ROBO DEER IN UTAH . . . The Associated Press talked with Utah wildlife officials recently about their use of roadside robot decoys to catch poachers, and how the effort has paid off with hundreds of citations. Wildlife officials say they've seen everything, from bowhunters shooting multiple arrows at the inanimate robot deer, amazed that it's not going down, to hunters with rifles repeatedly firing shots at it. "I've seen an individual shoot it with a 30-06 and couldn't figure out why it didn't go down after he hit it five or six times," said Utah DWR Sgt. Matt Briggs.

  • DETERRING STRAW PURCHASES . . . A cooperative effort between NSSF and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Don't Lie for the Other Guy was launched in 2000 to help retailers prevent illegal straw purchases and to warn the public that attempting to purchase a firearm for a prohibited person is a felony. The program has received more than $1 million in federal funding and distributed 40,000 program kits to firearms retailers. Learn more at nssf.org/50.
