NSSF Launches
Redesigned
WhereToShoot.org

FIND RANGES, TIPS AND OTHER RESOURCES FOR SHOOTERS . . . The National Shooting Sports Foundation today launched a newly redesigned WhereToShoot.org, the web's most comprehensive and frequently updated listing of shooting ranges. The site allows anyone to search for a place to shoot in their area. Visitors simply enter their state or zip code and a list of shooting ranges is created. Searches can be further narrowed by selecting which shooting discipline you are interested in. In addition to its popular search capability, the site now offers a number of other resources for shooters, including links to video tips, free printable targets, news about local shooting events and opportunities, safety information and more. If you own a shooting range or if you've recently changed locations, NSSF encourages you to enter or update your range information free of charge. Coming soon: NSSF is currently developing a WhereToShoot.org-themed iPhone app, which will be available later this fall.

Research

  • PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR HUNTING REMAINS STRONG, STUDY SHOWS . . . Results from a survey commissioned by NSSF have been released showing that three-fourths of survey respondents (74 percent) say they approve of hunting, a level of support that has not varied by more than a few percentage points since 1995. "The numbers have been consistent over the past two decades," said Mark Damian Duda, executive director of Responsive Management, the research firm that conducted the study. "Support for hunting is solid." Read more about the survey results.

  • NSSF 2011 FIREARMS RETAILER SURVEY REPORT NOW AVAILABLE . . . The 41-page NSSF Firearms Retailer Survey Report provides a better understanding of the opinions of firearm retailers regarding products carried, sales and consumer trends from 2008 through 2010. The report is available as a PDF to NSSF members for $50 and $250 to nonmembers. Order your copy today. For additional information, contact Dianne Vrablic, NSSF research coordinator, by email or 203-426-1320.

Government Relations

  • NSSF ENCOURAGES SUPPORT OF PRO-SHOOTING LEGISLATION . . . This summer Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) introduced S. 1249, the Target Practice and Marksmanship Training Support Act. This bi-partisan legislation will give states greater flexibility in using their Pittman-Robertson funds to establish safe recreational shooting areas. More specifically, the legislation will help facilitate the construction and expansion of public target ranges, including ranges on federal land managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. A companion bill, H.R. 3065, was introduced in the House last week and may soon be heard in the Environment and Public Works Committee. NSSF supports this legislation and encourages all sportsmen to contact their legislators and urge them to back this pro-shooting measure.

  • BILL WOULD PROTECT GUN OWNERS' RIGHTS ON RECREATIONAL LAND . . . NSSF applauds the introduction of S. 1588, "The Recreational Land Self-Defense Act." This legislation, introduced by Sens. Jim Webb (D-Va.) and John Boozman (R-Ark.), is the Senate companion bill to H.R. 1865 and is designed to protect the rights of gun owners to legally possess firearms for self-defense on lands owned or managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps owns or manages more than 11.7 million acres, including 400 lakes and river projects, 90,000 campsites and 4,000 miles of trails.

  • PENNSYLVANIA HUNTERS: CONTACT YOUR LAWMAKERS . . . Sportsmen in Pennsylvania who would like to see the state's ban on Sunday hunting lifted need to make their voices heard in the state House Game and Fisheries Committee. Those opposed to Sunday hunting are not staying quiet. They've been out on the front lines, making calls and lobbying legislators. If you live in the Keystone State and care about protecting and preserving the future of our hunting traditions, then it's important that you contact your state officials and urge them to support HB 1760, which would repeal the old blue law still on the books that bans Sunday hunting.

  • ATF BUYOUTS COULD SLOW LICENSE PROCESSING . . . The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has announced that its impending staffing cuts will likely slow down its processing of firearm and explosive license applications. Any potential slowdown in the license application process could disrupt the lawful commerce of firearms -- a major concern for industry. NSSF is taking this threat seriously and is in regular communication with ATF on this issue.

  • ATF OPEN LETTER ON MEDICAL MARIJUANA . . . ATF has issued an open letter to all federal firearms licensees in response to inquiries regarding the use of marijuana for medical purposes and its applicability to federal firearms laws. Read the letter.

News of Note

  • 1836 COLT REVOLVER SELLS FOR $977,500, SETS WORLD RECORD . . . JustLuxe.com reports a new world record for the sale of an American firearm. An 1836 Colt revolver from the Al Cali Collection sold for $977,500 at Heritage Auctions' Dallas Signature Arms & Armor Auction on Sept. 18. While specific details on the new owner of the Holster Model No. 5 Patterson Revolver were not revealed, it is known that the buyer is a collector of firearms and a Silicon Valley mogul.

  • WINGSHOOTING USA STARTS THIS WEEK . . . Today's bird hunting preserves provide access, opportunity and convenience. They also offer excellent hunting, great dog work and beautiful natural cover. Finding a preserve is as easy as heading to NSSF's WingshootingUSA.org. To help more hunters find the website, NSSF has partnered with TV host and producer Scott Linden on a show that shares the website's name, Wingshooting USA, as well as some of the finest upland hunting on the planet. The show begins airing this week on NBC Sports, Sportsman Channel, AMG-TV, Tuff TV and Legacy TV. Find where and when to watch the show.

  • ATK WINS U.K. AMMO CONTRACT . . . ATK has been awarded a $37 million contract to provide lightweight 30mm ammunition -- including the M788 TP (target practice) training round and the M789 High Explosive Dual Purpose (HEDP) tactical round -- to the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence.

  • LAPD STICKS WITH REMINGTON SHOTGUNS . . . Remington Arms Co. announced that the Los Angeles Police Department again chose the Remington Model 870 Police Magnum and Model 870 Police Marine Magnums as their department-issued shotguns.

  • SYLVIA BASHLINE, WRITER, OWAA EXECUTIVE, DIES . . . Sylvia Bashline, former food columnist for Field & Stream and Outdoor Life magazines, author of three books on game and fish cookery and former executive director of the Outdoor Writers Association of America from 1984 to 1994, passed away at her residence in State College, Pa., on Sept. 20. She was predeceased by her husband L. James "Jim" Bashline, who also was a prominent outdoor writer. "She will be remembered for her warmth and for her professionalism," said NSSF Director of Editorial Services Glenn Sapir, who worked with Bashline at Field & Stream and in OWAA.
