New Acting ATF Director Named

NSSF ISSUES STATEMENT ON LEADERSHIP CHANGE . . . The Department of Justice today announced the appointment of U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota B. Todd Jones to serve as acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Jones replaces ATF Acting Director Kenneth Melson. NSSF responded to the nomination of Jones with this statement.

  • NSSF TO HOST PRE-SHOW MILITARY FUNDRAISER AT TPC LAS VEGAS . . . NSSF announced today that it will host a pre-SHOT Show® charity golf outing Jan. 14 and 15 at TPC Las Vegas benefiting Birdies for the Brave, a national military outreach initiative proudly supported by the PGA TOUR. Proceeds from the event will benefit eight military homefront groups. NSSF will serve as Title Sponsor of the event. A variety of additional sponsorship opportunities are also available.   • INFLUX OF NEW EXHIBITORS, NEW PRODUCTS . . . Thanks to voluntary downsizing by long-time exhibitors and the repurposing of the exhibit floor, it looks like the 2012 SHOT Show will have more new exhibitors than any SHOT Show in recent memory. NSSF Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Chris Dolnack explains in a post on the SHOT Show Blog.

  • INDUSTRY LEGEND WALTER HOWE DIES AT 91 . . . Walter J. Howe, one of the legends of the 20th century American firearms industry, passed away last week. He was 91.   • ATF OPEN LETTER ON SEPT. 11 ANNIVERSARY . . . ATF has posted an open letter to all federal firearms licensees on its website in regard to the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Read the letter.

  • NSSF CORRECTS BOSTON GLOBE COLUMNIST . . . In his Boston Globe column ("Boston's illegal gun problem," Aug. 23, 2011), criminologist James Alan Fox takes on the Tiahrt Amendment and the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. NSSF sets the record straight.

  • LOUISIANA 2ND AMENDMENT SALES TAX HOLIDAY SEPT. 2-4 . . . Hunters and shooters can take advantage of the 2011 Louisiana Second Amendment Weekend Sales Tax Holiday on Friday, Sept. 2, through Sunday, Sept. 4. During the weekend, there will be an exemption on purchases of firearms, ammunition and hunting supplies. Complete details can be found at the Louisiana Department of Revenue's website.

Shooting Sports Grants

  • A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR COLLEGE SHOOTERS . . . With students entering or returning to their colleges and universities for the fall semester, NSSF stands ready, through its Collegiate Shooting Sports Initiative, to help fund new shooting programs and strengthen existing ones. In just two years NSSF, through its collegiate initiative, has awarded more than $300,000 to 40 colleges. A "How to Start a Club" resource guide, along with other relevant information on this grant program, is available online. At the website you can find, among other features, successful grant proposals from last year, along with final reports from the recipients, and an application for the next round of grants. This year's grant proposals are due by Sept. 23. Learn more at nssf.org/college.

  • APPLY FOR YOUTH SHOOTING SPORTS GRANTS . . . The Youth Shooting Sports Alliance is conducting its fifth National Youth Shooting Sports Program Needs Assessment to identify youth shooting sports programs that are being limited in growth by their need for additional equipment and supplies. Youth program leaders are encouraged to submit an application for YSSA support by October 14. The application can be found at youthshootingsa.com under "YSSA Outreach."

National Hunting & Fishing Day 2011

  • NHF DAY LESS THAN A MONTH AWAY . . . Less than a month away, National Hunting and Fishing Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the conservation efforts of hunters and shooters across the nation. Always the fourth Saturday in September, NHF Day 2011 will be Sept. 24. Help celebrate this special annual "holiday" established by Congress (in 1972) to recognize hunters, anglers and recreational shooters for their leadership and contributions to conservation in America. Through dues and contributions to conservation organizations, hunters give an additional $280 million annually for wildlife and habitat. Full Story

  • LADIES LOAD UP . . . Sue King organized the first women's-only Ladies Charity Classic at the American Shooting Center Club in Houston. The success of these events encouraged NSSF to start the Women’s Shooting Sports Foundation in 1992 with King as executive director. Learn more at nssf.org/50.
