NSSF Files Motion in Suit Against ATF

COURT ASKED TO HALT MULTIPLE-SALES REPORTING REQUIREMENT . . . Today, in its federal lawsuit against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the National Shooting Sports Foundation filed a motion asking the court to issue a preliminary injunction blocking ATF from requiring 8,500 federally licensed firearms retailers along the Southwest border (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California) to report multiple sales of certain long guns. Industry News

  • FIREARMS INDUSTRY JOBS . . . NSSF launched its online Firearms Industry Jobs service four years ago as an added benefit for its member companies. The webpage has proven to be a huge hit with both employers and job seekers. Each week it is one of Bullet Points' most-clicked-to links, and thousands each month visit the site. Members can easily post jobs by logging into the members-only section of NSSF's website, while job seekers can view current listings at nssf.org/jobs.

  • 2Q QUARTERLY IMPORTS DOWN 19% . . . NSSF reports that overall U.S. quarterly imports (in U.S. dollars) of all sporting arms and ammunition declined 19 percent in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2010. From April to June, imports were $273 million, down from $337.1 million as reported in the same quarter last year. Individually, the rifle category was up 26.3 percent, from $27.1 million to $34.2 million. The shotgun category increased 23.4 percent, from $38.3 million to $47.2 million. The muzzleloader category posted a 7 percent increase, from $6 million to $6.5 million. The ammunition category was down 42.2 percent, from $151.2 million to $87.4 million, while the shotgun-shells category fell 48.7 percent, from $5 million to $2.5 million. Handgun imports were down 13.1 percent, from $109.5 million to $95.1 million. For additional research information and historical import data, visit nssf.org/research.

  • FIREARMS MAKER 'LOOKS BETTER THAN GOLD' AS INVESTMENT . . . With uncertainty clouding the nation's financial markets, investors have been flocking to gold. Investors have also been flocking to Ruger. Financial analysis site Seeking Alpha on Sunday featured an article titled, "Sturm, Ruger Looks Better Than Gold." Columnist Bill Gunderson writes, "Sturm, Ruger has outperformed gold over the last 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 3 years, and 5 years!" Read the article.

  • HANNA: REMINGTON AN 'ASSET TO UPSTATE, NATIONAL SECURITY' . . . U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna (R-N.Y.) on Friday visited the Remington Arms facility in Ilion, N.Y., GateHouse News Service reports. "Remington has been on the cutting edge of manufacturing goods for markets ranging from hunting and sporting to military and law enforcement," Hanna said. "There's a proud history here in Ilion and it's clear that our talented workforce produces a quality product and has done so for hundreds of years. Remington has been and continues to be a real asset to Herkimer County."

Government Relations

  • NSSF EDUCATES COURT ON MODERN SPORTING RIFLES . . . NSSF has filed a friend-of-the-court brief in a case challenging Cook County's broad and sweeping assault-weapons ordinance banning the manufacture, sale and possession of several popular classes of semi-automatic firearms, including commonly owned and used modern sporting rifles, simply because of their cosmetic features. In its brief, NSSF provides information from its Modern Sporting Rifle Comprehensive Consumer Report to educate the Illinois Supreme Court about MSRs and their owners and the lawful purposes for which MSRs are commonly and widely used -- hunting, target shooting, collecting and self-defense.

  • CHICAGO MAYOR JOINS ANTI-GUN GROUP . . . The Associated Press reports that Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has become the latest member of the anti-gun Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition. The coalition, led and founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, continues to push for gun-control measures at the state and federal level -- measures that stand in opposition to the will of the people. Though Emanuel and his colleagues in MAIG may wish their rule extended beyond their cities' municipal boarders, it does not. And regardless, NSSF reminds Mayor Emanuel that the Second Amendment applies to Chicago as much as it does to Cheyenne.

  • IOWA COMMITTEE VOTES TO DELAY BAN ON TRADITIONAL SHOT . . . The Iowa Administrative Rules Review Committee has voted (9-1) to delay the rule that would prevent the use of traditional (lead) shot for dove hunting. The issue will now be delayed until the 2012 session. If the committee fails to revisit the use of traditional shot for dove hunting by the end of the 2012 session, the ban will stand with no further discussion. Read more on the NSSF Blog.

  • NEWSPAPER SUPPORTS HUNTING BAN; NSSF RESPONDS . . . Another Pennsylvania newspaper -- the Lehigh Valley Express-Times -- ran an anti-Sunday hunting editorial this past weekend. NSSF responded with this letter to the editor.

News of Note

At the recent Professional Outdoor Media Association Annual Business Conference in Ogden, Utah, NSSF engaged many of the nation's top outdoor communicators during a sponsored luncheon on Shooting Day and in a panel discussion on the "tactical market." • POMA PRESENTS PINNACLE AWARDS, SETS CONFERENCE DATES . . . POMA's 2011 Pinnacle Award honorees were announced by Kevin Tate, vice president of Mossy Oak Productions, at POMA's Annual Business Conference in Ogden. Mossy Oak has been the presenting partner of the Pinnacle Awards since the program's inception. The awards honor journalists for exceptional achievement in writing, photography/illustration/art and broadcasting focused on wildlife conservation. • NORRIS WINS OPEN DIVISION TITLE AT STEEL CHALLENGE . . . BJ Norris won the Open Division title at the 2011 Steel Challenge, the Shooting Wire reports. Norris also won the Rimfire Open and Steel Master titles. Jessie Harrison won the Women's Division and the Rimfire, Women's Limited and Steel Master titles. Dave Sevigny won the Limited title and Mike Seeklander won the Production title. Results are posted at steelchallenge.com. As it has in past years, NSSF teamed up with the Steel Challenge to introduce newcomers to shooting by hosting a First Shots event in conjunction with the match.

  • 10 WAYS TO PROTECT AMERICA'S HUNTING HERITAGE . . . Respecting game, landowners and the land are among the ways hunters can help maintain public support for hunting, according to the Boone and Crockett Club. "Modern society has high expectations of hunters," said B&C President Ben Wallace. Here's how hunters can help keep hunting fair, safe and meaningful so that it continues to be a longlasting American tradition. Read the press release.

NSSF and the U.S. Biathlon Association teamed up to sponsor more than 100 races in 75 cities during the mid-1990s. Learn more at nssf.org/50.
