  • ATK REPORTS SALES DOWN 4% IN SECURITY AND SPORTING GROUP . . . ATK (NYSE:ATK) reported that first-quarter sales declined 4 percent in its Sporting and Security Group, which includes ammunition for law enforcement, military and sporting applications as well as optics, reloading gear and sport-shooting and tactical accessories. ATK said the decrease in sales volume was "primarily the result of advanced sales of commercial ammunition in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2011 due to the price increase implemented in the first quarter of fiscal year 2012." Overall, ATK reported first-quarter net income of $72 million, compared to $75 million in the prior-year quarter.

  • RUGER BUCKS THE TREND . . . The nation's financial markets have been on the decline since July 22, but one firearms industry stock has been able to buck the trend. • NSSF LAWSUIT CHALLENGES ATF REPORTING REQUIREMENT . . . NSSF has filed a lawsuit challenging the legal authority of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) under the Gun Control Act to compel 8,500 federally licensed firearms retailers in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas to report the sale of two or more rifles. NSSF's lawsuit seeks an injunction to block ATF from implementing the reporting requirement. ATF has sent "demand letters" to firearms retailers in the four states to inform retailers they must begin reporting such sales by August 14. Read NSSF's news release.

  • NSSF FILES BRIEF IN COOK COUNTY LAWSUIT . . . Last Monday, the NSSF filed a friend-of-the-court brief in a case challenging Cook County's broad and sweeping assault-weapons ordinance banning the manufacture, sale and possession of several popular classes of semi-automatic firearms, including commonly owned and used modern sporting rifles (MSRs), simply because of their cosmetic features. In its amicus brief, NSSF educates the Illinois Supreme Court about modern sporting rifles.

  • COALITION URGES GOVERNOR TO REMOVE ANTI-HUNTING PROVISION . . . A recent rule by the Iowa Natural Resource Commission to prohibit the use of traditional shot for dove hunting has led to a coalition of sportsmen's groups, including NSSF, urging the governor to exercise his executive authority and remove the anti-hunting provision. The vast majority of hunters use inexpensive and readily available lead shot. Despite the millions of hunters that take to the fields each fall, there has been no evidence of any deleterious impacts to dove populations. If allowed to stand, the alternative shot requirement will limit participation by the hunting public.

  • BILL TO REPEAL BAN ON MODERN SPORTING ARMS IN MASSACHUSETTS . . . NSSF is urging all Massachusetts retailers and firearms owners to support the Gun Owners' Action League and Rep. George Peterson's recently filed legislation, "An Act Repealing the Ban on Modern Sporting Arms." Please contact your legislators and ask them to co-sponsor the bill.
