Helping Ranges Attract More Shooters

NSSF AWARDS $435,000 TO 22 SHOOTING FACILITIES . . . The National Shooting Sports Foundation has awarded $435,000 in grants to 22 shooting ranges to develop programs that put more people on the firing line. The NSSF Range Grant Program assists qualifying shooting ranges in their efforts to introduce newcomers, re-activate lapsed shooters, encourage active shooters to try another shooting discipline, and that promote the enjoyment of the shooting sports to people of all ages. See which ranges received grants.

  • SHOOTING INDUSTRY MASTERS DRAWS RECORD ATTENDANCE . . . A record 370 shooters from around the firearms industry competed at the sprawling 2,000-acre Rockcastle Shooting Center in Park City, Ky., this past weekend at the ninth annual Shooting Industry Masters. Organized by FMG Publications, the event brought industry members together for a great cause: to raise money for NSSF's First Shots program. All money raised from the event will help introduce new people to the shooting sports and firearms safety at local ranges across the country. Stay tuned to next week's Bullet Points for results from the competition.

  • ACADEMY OF EXCELLENCE NAMES 2011 WINNERS . . . The 20th Annual Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence Awards were held Friday in conjunction with the Shooting Industry Masters. The 500-member voting academy, which includes manufacturers, distributors, executives, storefront retailers and outdoor writers, named Hornady the Manufacturer of the Year. Ellett Brothers was awarded Distributor of the Year. Ellett Brothers also received the Citizenship Award. Larry Potterfield, of MidwayUSA, earned the night's sole individual honor, the Shooting Industry Award, for donations to youth shooting sports that topped $4 million in 2010. View all of this year's award recipients.

  • NSSF WELCOMES FOUR NEW VOTING MEMBERS . . . Four businesses recently made the commitment to fulfill Voting Member status. NSSF welcomes their support and increased involvement. "Voting Member status represents a considerable financial commitment, and we are pleased that these four companies have seen the value of this level of support," said Steve Sanetti, NSSF president and CEO. "Every new voting member makes NSSF stronger and gives all of us a louder voice." Visit their websites to learn more about these companies: Provo, Utah-based Action Target; Sedalia, Mo.-based Nammo Lapua Oy; Kingston, N.Y.-based Numrich Gun Parts Corp.; and Pacific Palisades, Calif.-based ZEV Technologies.

  • FIREARMS RETAILER AND WORLD FAMOUS COLLECTOR DIES . . . Well-known gun collector Jack Puglisi died last week. He was 69. In 2007, Puglisi paid a then-world record of $287,500, including auction fees, for a gun made by Parker Bros. -- a gun with an interesting past, the Duluth News Tribune reports. Puglisi was the owner of Puglisi Gun Emporium in Gary-New Duluth, Minn.

Government Relations

  • SENATORS TO OBAMA ADMINISTRATION: 2ND AMENDMENT NOT NEGOTIABLE . . . In a letter to President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, 45 senators expressed their concern about the dangers posed to Second Amendment rights by the United Nations' Arms Trade Treaty. The senators stated their intention to oppose ratification of an Arms Trade Treaty that in any way restricts the rights of law-abiding American gun owners. "Our country's sovereignty and the rights of American citizens must not be infringed upon by the United Nations," said Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.). "Today, the Senate sends a powerful message to the Obama Administration: an Arms Trade Treaty that does not protect ownership of civilian firearms will fail in the Senate. Our firearm freedoms are not negotiable." Read more.

  • MICHIGAN FAMILIES AFIELD BILL SIGNED INTO LAW . . . Gov. Rick Snyder has signed into law legislation to eliminate the state's minimum age of 10 for hunting in Michigan and to create a new mentored-youth hunting program. New youth hunters will be allowed to hunt under the supervision of an experienced adult mentor. This marks the second round of legislation in Michigan to reflect the Families Afield mission of breaking down barriers that prevent responsible youth from hunting with parents and other supervisory adult mentors. The Families Afield concept has been a joint initiative of NSSF, the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and National Wild Turkey Federation, with support from the National Rifle Association, Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation and many grassroots organizations.

  • COURT FINDS IN FAVOR OF CONNECTICUT SHOOTING RANGE . . . The Connecticut Superior Court has ruled in favor of Blue Trail Range of Wallingford, Conn., on all counts in a lawsuit filed by a local land owner, alleging that operating the range was a danger to the community. "At last, we can refocus on doing what we do best: advancing the shooting sports, coaching junior teams and operating a premier shooting range for law enforcement and private shooters," Blue Trail owner David Lyman said in a press release. Lyman said the range has suffered over the years because of the lawsuit. Read more about the decision on the Save Blue Trail Range website.

  • EDITORIAL BOARDS CONTINUE TO MISLEAD . . . While NSSF was announcing its intention to file a lawsuit challenging the legal authority of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to require multiple-sales reporting of modern sporting rifles, leading editorial boards, including the Washington Post and New York Times, continued to hail the regulation in an attempt to generate support among the American public. NSSF submitted letters to the editor to both newspapers. The Post letter ran on Friday.

  • NSSF FIRES BACK AT REP. MORAN . . . In a recent article in The Hill, Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) said that the attempt by some in Congress to strip funding for ATF's new long-gun reporting requirements was akin to "a virtual wholesale slaughter." Moran went on to say that, "The NRA is so afraid that the people who are really funding the NRA, the gun manufacturers, might lose some sales that we're willing to sacrifice the lives of these people that are casualties of this gun war. And we're promoting it. We're enabling . . . that slaughter to continue." Read NSSF's response.

Safety & Education

NSSF RESPONDS TO FIREARM SAFETY REQUEST . . . After three recent firearms-related accidents in the St. Louis area involving children, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, at the request of the St. Louis Police Department, has shipped Project ChildSafe gun lock kits and additional firearm safety educational materials to the agency for free distribution to gun owners. An NSSF representative also was a guest on the local Target Talk radio show to discuss safe firearm storage in the home and the many resources available at nssf.org/safety, such as NSSF's firearm safety videos for children. As a reminder to safely store firearms out of the reach of children, gun owners can view this video on safe storage.

NSSF History Snapshot

Throughout its 50th anniversary year, NSSF each week will be spotlighting various moments from the Foundation's history.

  • OLYMPIC PRIMER . . . NSSF staged a first-of-its-kind celebrity shoot prior to the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles attended by Hollywood "shooting stars" Robert Stack, Roy Rogers, Denver Pyle and Slim Pickens, among others. It was broadcast on Entertainment Tonight, priming the audience for the Olympic shooting events. Learn more at nssf.org/50.
