Youth

The firing line in Sparta, Ill., is a remarkable sight each year when the Scholastic Clay Target Program rolls into town. More than 1,500 young shotgunners competed at this year's event.

  • 'LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES OF THE SHOOTING SPORTS' . . . It's been called the "Little League World Series of the Shooting Sports," and last week the Scholastic Clay Target Program's National Championships again proved why it's earned that nickname. More than 1,500 young shooters and their families traveled to Sparta, Ill., to compete in the event at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex. Participation increased 6 percent compared to last year. NSSF developed the popular program, which allows youths to compete as a team in trap, skeet and sporting clays. SCTP is now overseen by the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF). Team and individual scores from the big event have been posted at shooterspost.com. Learn more about SCTP at shootsctp.org.

Year-over-year total U.S. firearm production declined 2.7 percent. Handgun production increased 14.9 percent, while rifle production decreased 18.8 percent and shotgun production declined 1.2 percent. The 2010 figures are interim data; final 2010 data are expected by Jan. 30.

Government Relations

  • AMENDMENTS ATTACKING GUN TRACE DATA DEFEATED . . . NSSF is pleased to report that amendments attacking gun trace data and the firearms industry have been defeated. On Wednesday, NSSF sent out an action alert asking all industry members and gun owners to urge the House Appropriations Committee to vote "No" on two amendments: the Schiff (D-CA-29) amendment, which would have stripped from an appropriations bill an important law-enforcement protection, known as the Tiahrt Amendment, that safeguards law-enforcement-only firearms-tracing data; and the Honda (D-CA-15) amendment, supported by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, which would have continued the recently launched regulatory assault on the firearms industry. • RETAILERS HEEDING CAUTION OF ANTI-GUN SURVEY . . . Last month, NSSF cautioned federally licensed firearms retailers that anti-gun researcher and activist Garen Wintemute and his colleagues at the University of California at Davis were encouraging retailers to participate in a survey to better understand "the unique perspective of firearms licensees on important social issues and the firearms business itself." It appears that retailers have heeded NSSF's caution.

  • CONCEALED-CARRY LAW BOOSTS GUN SALES, CLASS ENROLLMENT . . . Wisconsin firearms retailers and instructors have seen a steady increase in business since the state's concealed-carry bill was signed into law, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports. "This time of year, handgun sales are always good. But now, with the passing of (the law), it's exceptionally good," said Arlyn Bradley, owner of Bradley Gun Sales in Denmark, Wis.

Throughout its 50th anniversary year, NSSF each week will be spotlighting various moments from the Foundation's history.

  • WHAT'S IN A NAME . . . Dubbing it Hunter's Clays, NSSF was among the first to promote the game of sporting clays in the United States. The moniker didn't catch on, but the game certainly did and helped spawn a television show, The World of Clay Target Shooting, hosted by Grits Gresham and Bob Brister. Learn more at nssf.org/50.
