Git-R-Done! Larry the Cable Guy to
Perform at State of the Industry Dinner

JAN. 17 AT SHOT SHOW . . . Known for his signature catchphrase, "Git-R-Done," Larry the Cable Guy is selling out theaters and arenas across the United States. On Jan. 17, the comedy superstar will perform at NSSF's State of the Industry Dinner on the opening night of the SHOT Show in Las Vegas. Tickets will first go on sale to NSSF's voting members, then to all NSSF members, then to all SHOT Show attendees. Stay tuned for more details.   • MAKE TRAVEL PLANS . . . It may be July, but as all SHOT Show veterans know, the show will be here before you know it. Now is the time to make hotel reservations.   • SMITH & WESSON 4Q FIREARM SALES UP 12.7%; PISTOL SALES UP 30% . . . Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. (NASDAQ:SWHC) reported that fourth-quarter sales in its firearms division were a record $101.7 million, up 12.7 percent compared to the same period last year. The company said higher sales "were evident across nearly all product lines, with BODYGUARD products, price repositioned polymer framed pistols and modern sporting rifles as primary drivers." Pistol sales grew 29.9 percent. Firearm backlog grew to $186.7 million at year end, up $112.9 million from the end of the third quarter and $78.7 million higher than at the end of the previous fiscal year.

  • BILL STEVENS, WHO HELPED LAUNCH 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS PROGRAM, DIES . . . Bill Stevens, who worked for more than 40 years as Federal Premium Ammunition's conservation manager, passed away Sunday. He was 72. During his career, Stevens increased Federal's support of 4-H and also helped launch the 4-H Shooting Sports Program -- now reaching nearly 200,000 participants each year. He was also instrumental in recruiting other members of the firearms industry to support the 4-H family, the Youth Shooting Sports Alliance and other successful programs. NSSF greatly appreciates Bill's outstanding contributions to the shooting sports and conservation over the years and extends its sympathy to his family.

  • BULLET POINTS, NSSF VIDEO HONORED WITH APEX AWARDS . . . Two of the National Shooting Sports Foundation's most visible communications -- the weekly Bullet Points newsletter and its 50th Anniversary video -- have captured coveted APEX Awards of Excellence. Read NSSF's news release.

  • LAST CALL FOR SHOT BUSINESS AWARD NOMINATIONS . . . NSSF will be considering suggestions for a slate of nominees for the 2011 SHOT Business Awards. The awards, to be presented at the 2012 SHOT Show, will go to individuals, companies and/or organizations for Retailer, Distributor, Manufacturer's Representative, Company/Organization and Person of the Year. For most of these categories, the chief criterion is the person or company's community outreach and efforts to preserve and promote our hunting and shooting heritage and protect our firearms freedoms.   • U.S. FISH & WILDLIFE DIRECTOR CONFIRMED . . . A guest speaker at last month's NSSF Shooting Sports Summit, Daniel M. Ashe has been confirmed by the Senate as the 16th director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Ashe, a career employee of the agency, assumes his duties immediately. During his USFWS tenure, Ashe was science advisor to the director and deputy director for policy before being nominated for director by President Obama last December. Ashe helped craft the strategy that will guide the agency’s efforts to deal with the effects of a changing climate, and he was a leader in developing the agency's Landscape Conservation Cooperatives. Ashe, who served as the chief of the National Wildlife Refuge System from 1998 to 2003, is an avid waterfowl hunter and angler.

  • LEGISLATION WOULD END SUNDAY HUNTING BAN IN PENNSYLVANIA . . . Legislation to end Pennsylvania's ban on Sunday hunting has been introduced. HB 1760 follows last week's passage of a resolution by the Pennsylvania Game Commission calling for an end to the ban. Read more on the NSSF Blog.

  • RESOURCES FOR FFL HOLDERS . . . NSSF has published two brief resources for Federal Firearms Licensees -- "Sweat the Details" and the "FFL Record Retention Reference Guide." These resources explain to FFLs what a "willful violation" is under the law so they can develop, create and implement business practices that will ensure they remain in compliance with the requirements of the Gun Control Act and ATF regulations governing the operation of their licensed business. NSSF will be distributing copies of both, along with other educational resources, to every FFL in America.

  • SHOOTING RANGES IN CHICAGO . . . An ordinance will reportedly be introduced this week that will allow shooting ranges to operate in Chicago. The Sun Times reports that the ordinance limits ranges to areas zoned for manufacturing and that anyone opening a range would have to obtain a gun permit from the city and obtain approval from the Chicago Police Department for a safety plan.

News of Note

  • DUCK POPULATION AT ALL-TIME HIGH . . . With prairie breeding grounds soaked by tremendous rainfall, a record 45.6 million ducks are reported by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Canadian Wildlife Service, the most since the annual breeding population and habitat survey was started in 1955. According to a Delta Waterfowl press release, blue-winged teal, shovelers and redheads soared to record levels, and mallard, pintail, canvasback and gadwall numbers rose substantially from 2010. According to Ducks Unlimited, this was only the fifth time in the survey’s history that the total duck population exceeded 40 million.

  • U.S. RIFLE SHOOTER BEYERLE IN LINE FOR OLYMPIC SPOT . . . American Jamie Beyerle, the world's top-ranked 3-position rifle shooter, has qualified for the 2012 Olympics, the Associated Press reports. Beyerle, of Lebanon, Pa., will compete in her second straight Olympics in that event, pending formal approval of her nomination by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Beyerle finished fifth in the 3-position competition at Beijing in 2008.

  • USAMU, FORT BENNING PAY RESPECTS TO SOLDIER AND MARKSMEN . . . Family members and civilians gathered last week to pay their final respects to Sgt. 1st Class Jason Sargent, who lost his courageous battle against a terminal illness June 25. Sargent, 39, was a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit for more than five years. He was a decorated member of the Service Pistol platoon as a member of several championship teams and earned several accolades. Read more.

  • AUCTION TO BENEFIT FIRST SHOTS PROGRAM . . . FMG Publications is sponsoring an auction on GunBroker.com to support NSSF's First Shots program. The auction, being held now to July 23, is part of FMG's Shooting Industry Masters shooting competition. The auction on GunBroker.com features a SCAR 17S rifle in .308, donated by FNH-USA; a customized Springfield Armory XD Tactical in .40 S&W, donated by Cylinder & Slide Shop; and a Ranger Break-Top in .22 Magnum, donated by North American Arms.   • NSSF SUPPORTS SUMMER TARGET SHOOTING CAMP PROGRAM . . . It's summer camp season, and from Connecticut to Texas to Arizona target shooting is now an option for parents who want their children to receive an introduction to firearms safety and marksmanship skills. NSSF, developer of the Scholastic Clay Target Program and First Shots programs, is the sponsor of the new Youth Shooting Academy. "Youth have the option of going to summer camp to learn about soccer, computers and swimming, why not target shooting?" asked Randy Clark, NSSF's managing director of business development. NSSF is supporting the program with $75,000 in funding. Read the press release about Hartford Gun Club’s camp.

  • PARTNERING WITH SCOUTS . . . In the early 1980s, NSSF established a partnership with the Boy Scouts of America to promote firearm safety and marksmanship skills that were rewarded with special patches for shooting a qualifying score. Over the years, millions of Scouts were able to experience the fun and excitement of target shooting through this partnership. Learn more at nssf.org/50.
