NSSF DONATES $150,000 TO NAWCA . . . Demonstrating its continued support for conservation, members of the firearms industry, through NSSF, have donated $150,000 to supplement congressional funding of the North American Wetland Conservation Act (NAWCA), a grant program providing federal cost-share funding to support the North American Waterfowl Management Plan.

Government Relations

  • NSSF STATEMENT ON 'FAST AND FURIOUS' . . . A report issued last week by Sen. Charles R. Grassley (R-IA) and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) accused the Justice Department of allowing nearly 2,500 guns to flow illegally into Mexico as part of an operation dubbed "Fast and Furious" that has been the centerpiece of hearings before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Read more at the NSSF Blog.

  • CALIFORNIA HEARINGS ON ANTI-GUN BILLS . . . On Tuesday, several anti-gun bills will be heard in both the Senate and Assembly Public Safety Committees. The following three bills will be heard in the Assembly Public Safety Committee: SB 427, which would aim to implement the handgun ammunition registration law (AB 962) and add new provisions impacting retailers; SB 798, a bill that will impact both the airgun and airsoft industries; and SB 819, which would allow the Department of Justice to raid the Dealer Record of Sales account. Please contact members of the committee and express your opposition. The Senate Public Safety Committee will also have a hearing to discuss AB 809, which would require firearms retailers to report the same sale records for long guns that they currently collect for handguns. Please contact committee members and urge them to oppose this bill.

  • MASSACHUSETTS HEARING TOMORROW ON ANTI-GUN BILLS . . . Massachusetts legislators are at it again this year trying to pass legislation that will impact only law-abiding gun owners and firearms retailers. The Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security has a hearing tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in Room B-2. The list of bills includes microstamping H.1561, one-gun-a-month S.1202, GPS locators in firearms S.1224 and further expansion of the "assault" weapons ban H.2916. NSSF is urging everyone in the Commonwealth to contact members of the committee and express opposition on these bills and, if possible, attend the hearing.

  • NSSF AT SENATE SPORTSMEN'S ROUNDTABLE . . . At a discussion of key sportsmen's issues with Republican senators last week, NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti pressed for passage of the Shooting Protection Act (S.B. 838, H.R. 1558). The bill will prevent anti-hunting groups from forcing the Environmental Protection Agency to ban traditional ammunition--ammunition that contains lead-core components--under the Toxic Substances Control Act. In 1970 Congress specifically exempted traditional ammunition from being regulated by TSCA. "No science exists that shows traditional ammunition is presently significantly impacting wildlife populations or has had any adverse human health impact," said Sanetti. The discussion, led by Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation President Jeff Crane and Senator John Thune, co-chair of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, involved leading hunting and wildlife conservation groups, industry and nearly a dozen GOP senators. More about traditional ammunition and the roundtable.

Industry News

  • INDUSTRY WARNS RETAILERS OF ANTI-GUN SURVEY . . . Anti-gun researcher and activist Garen Wintemute and his colleagues at the University of California at Davis have begun sending out surveys to firearms retailers across the country. A letter accompanying the survey, signed by Dr. Wintemute, claims the aim of their research is to better understand "the unique perspective of firearms licensees on important social issues and the firearms business itself." Given that Dr. Wintemute has authored such anti-gun articles as "The Ring of Fire: The Handgun Makers of Southern California," NSSF is urging extreme caution should retailers decide to participate in the survey. Read the NSSF Blog post. Read the cover letter and survey.

  • NSSF SAYS THANKS TO SHOOTING SPORTS SUMMIT ATTENDEES . . . In a brief video to attendees of the 2011 Shooting Sports Summit, NSSF's Chris Dolnack says thanks to participants for helping to make the Summit a great success and provides a brief overview of the recent gathering's events. Learn what happened at the Summit.

  • NEW RIFLE COMPANY TAKES OVER BUSHMASTER PLANT . . . The former owner of Bushmaster Firearms International LLC and other investors have created a new rifle company in the former Bushmaster manufacturing plant in Windham, Maine. Called Windham Weaponry, the company will make rifles and employ up to half of the 73 employees who worked at the Bushmaster plant, which closed earlier this year. Read more.

  • SOUTHWICK ASSOCIATES COMPILES OUTDOOR MEDIA USAGE . . . The new Southwick Associate's Media Monitor (SAMM) is a research tool that outdoor publishers, television producers and ad buyers may find valuable. SAMM joins other Southwick Associates reports such as the monthly Hunter Survey, Shooter Survey and Angler Survey in providing data used by outdoor product manufacturers and nonprofit organizations to understand the participation and purchasing decisions of consumers and constituents.

News of Note

  • NSSF 50TH ANNIVERSARY VIDEO WINS PEOPLE'S TELLY AWARD . . . The people have spoken, and thanks to your support, the NSSF's 50th Anniversary video was awarded with a Bronze Telly in the 2011 People's Telly Awards. The Telly Awards honor the best local, regional and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions and work created for the Web. "NSSF's many achievements over our 50-year history provided us with a compelling story to tell," commented Chris Dolnack. "So while the award recognizes the video production by our in-house communications staff, it is really a tribute to our members, partners and staff who made so many successes possible."

  • THE BIG OPPORTUNITY . . . In the June/July issue of SHOT Business magazine, Editor Slaton L. White suggests to retailers that within the law enforcement and tactical market lies opportunity that should not be missed. Read the editor's column and see what one of the fastest-growing industry segments has to offer.

  • SPORTSMEN VICTORIOUS IN LEGAL FIGHT TO HUNT ON PUBLIC LANDS . . . The rights of sportsmen to hunt on units of the 100 million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System were solidified last week thanks to the efforts of leading hunter organizations. In 2003, the Fund for Animals, which later merged with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to stop hunting on thousands of acres of wildlife refuges. This past April, after an eight-year legal battle, the suit was dismissed by a federal judge who rejected efforts by the HSUS and radical anti-hunting groups to make an end run around firmly established environmental law to close hunting on public land. The decision became final last week when HSUS missed its deadline to appeal the ruling.

  • TEAM CASPIAN CAPTURES STC TITLE . . . At the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Team Caspian won the the Sportsman's Team Challenge National Championships for the fifth straight year. Caspian Arms-sponsored shooter Bruce Piatt teamed up with Robert Massey and Jim Clark Jr. to win both the three-man and two-man team titles. STC, now in its 24th year, sponsors regional events and the nationals. Learn more about the event by searching www.sportsmansteamchallenge.com.

NSSF History Snapshot

Throughout its 50th anniversary year, NSSF each week will be spotlighting various moments from the Foundation's history.

  • ONE VOICE . . . Winchester executive Bill Talley, who was chairman of the NSSF Board of Governors from 1972 to 1981, summed up NSSF's inclusiveness as a trade association with this imperative, "The entire shooting-associated industry, from gun maker to boot maker, should speak with one voice." Such unity is a hallmark of present-day NSSF. Learn more at nssf.org/50.
