Industry Unites at Shooting Sports Summit

MOVING FORWARD . . . Though there are more than 80 million gun owners in America, the hunting and shooting sports community remains a fairly tight-knit group. That unity among such a large group is unique. It's also a big reason why our sports and our traditions have and will continue to thrive. The unity of both our industry and our sports was on full display last week in Louisville, Ky., where more than 175 leaders from throughout the industry and the hunting and shooting sports communities took part in NSSF's 2011 Shooting Sports Summit.

More from the Summit

  • TWEETS CAPTURE SUMMIT IN REAL-TIME . . . A number of attendees at the Summit chimed in throughout the event in real-time on Twitter using the #NSSFSummit hashtag. NSSF has posted the transcript of the Summit Twitter conversation from start to finish. The conversation also streamed live throughout the event on a large flat-panel screen at the Summit.

  • AUDIENCE POLLING PROVIDES INSIGHT ON ISSUES . . . At the conclusion of the Summit, a panel made up of industry and state-agency representatives solicited audience feedback on a variety of topics covered during the two-day event. Using polling technology, attendees provided instant input on several issues. Here are a few of the results from the audience polling.

  • NSSF HONORS RESEARCH EXPERTS FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO INDUSTRY. . . NSSF took the time to honor two research professionals for their longtime contributions to industry: Mark Damian Duda of Responsive Management and Rob Southwick of Southwick Associates. Their work provides the foundation for many NSSF programs and has helped make NSSF's research department an indispensable resource for media, legislators and its 6,500 members. Read more.

  • SEND US YOUR FEEDBACK . . . As NSSF President Steve Sanetti noted in his closing remarks, the sharing of ideas stimulated by new research and discussion was the reason for having the Summit in the first place. "We need your ideas," said Sanetti. "You may indeed furnish everyone with a 'model of success' that we don't yet appreciate." NSSF invites attendees to provide their Summit-related comments and ideas to Melissa Schilling, NSSF's manager of recruitment and retention, at mschilling@nssf.org.

Government Relations

  • SUNDAY HUNTING IN PENNSYLVANIA . . . The Pennsylvania House Game and Fisheries Committee held a public hearing Thursday to discuss Sunday hunting. Testifying alongside NSSF in favor of Sunday hunting were the NRA, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs. Opposition to Sunday hunting was limited to the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and the Humane Society of the United States. NSSF anticipates that a formal bill to allow Sunday hunting will be introduced in the coming weeks.

  • HOLDING THE HUMANE SOCIETY ACCOUNTABLE . . . The nonprofit watchdog group Humanewatch.org has gone on the offensive with two full-page advertisements running in the Los Angeles Times, educating the public that the Humane Society of the United States gives less than 1 percent of its budget to local animal shelters.
