More Than 175 Industry Leaders
to Meet This Week in Louisville

2011 SHOOTING SPORTS SUMMIT . . . From Tuesday evening to Thursday afternoon, the future of hunting and shooting in America will be the topic of conversation for more than 175 leaders from throughout the industry. The Shooting Sports Summit will present new research, programs and ideas that could greatly impact participation in our sports over the coming years. Learn more, see a list of attendees and view the agenda at nssf.org/summit.

  • USE THE HASHTAG: #NSSFSUMMIT . . . Summit attendees that use Twitter are encouraged to use the hashtag #NSSFSummit throughout the Shooting Sports Summit. By using this hashtag in your tweets, you are essentially contributing to a "live journal" of the event. NSSF will be collecting all of these posts and will provide a link to all of them in the following week's Bullet Points. Hear something worth noting? Have an idea? Tweet it and tag it with #NSSFSummit.

  • GUNBROKER.COM COMMISSIONS RIFLES IN SUPPORT OF SUMMIT . . . GunBroker.com, an active supporter of NSSF, has commissioned a special pair of Henry Repeating rifles for auction in support of the Shooting Sports Summit. Proceeds from the auction of the guns on GunBroker.com will be earmarked to support Task Force 20-20 initiatives identified by Summit attendees. Task Force 20-20 initiatives are designed to increase participation in hunting and shooting sports 20 percent by 2014. Learn more and bid on these one-of-kind rifles.

  • 12TH STRAIGHT MONTH-OVER-MONTH INCREASE FOR NSSF-ADJUSTED NICS FIGURES . . . The May 2011 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 696,947 is an increase of 11.4 percent over the NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 625,763 in May 2010. For comparison, the unadjusted May 2011 NICS figure of 1,219,872 is an increase of 20.8 percent over the unadjusted NICS figure of 1,009,818 in May 2010. This marks the 12th straight month-over-month increase in NSSF-adjusted NICS figures. The adjusted NICS data were derived by NSSF by subtracting out all NICS purpose code permit checks used by several states such as Kentucky, Iowa and Utah for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases. Though not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provide a more accurate picture of current market conditions. Read more.

Government Relations

  • HEARING TO END SUNDAY HUNTING PROHIBITION IN PENNSYLVANIA . . . The Pennsylvania House Game and Fisheries Committee will hold a public hearing this Thursday, June 9, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Seven Springs Mountain Resort, 777 Waterwheel Drive, Seven Springs, PA 15622. NSSF and the Sunday Hunting Coalition are urging all sportsmen to come out and show their support for the removal of this antiquated blue law. Expanding Sunday hunting could have a tremendous economic impact on Pennsylvania to the tune of more than $764 million.

  • NSSF SUBMITS COMMENTS ON ATF REQUEST FOR MULTIPLE SALES REPORTING OF LONG GUNS . . . NSSF has submitted comments to the Department of Justice (Office of Management and Budget / Office of Information and Regulation Affairs) on the ATF information-collection request concerning multiple sales of certain rifles. The ATF request was originally published in the Federal Register on Dec. 17 and was recently amended and published in the Federal Register on April 29.

  • YOUTH HUNTING LEGISLATION . . . The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance notes that efforts to expand youth hunting opportunities are on the move in Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania. These bills are in line with the Families Afield initiative, a program established by NSSF, USSA and the National Wild Turkey Federation. Along with the National Rifle Association and the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, the Families Afield coalition has worked to pass measures in 32 states, leading to more than 600,000 apprentice or mentored hunting licenses sold. For more detailed information on each state's legislation, read the USSA news release.

  • CALIFORNIA BILL WOULD IMPACT AIRGUN, AIRSOFT INDUSTRIES . . . California legislators are preparing to vote on SB 798, a bill that will impact both the airgun and airsoft industries. This legislation would mandate that all airsoft and BB guns be brightly colored, so, in theory, law enforcement could distinguish them from actual firearms. This law could jeopardize the safety of the public and especially police officers, who may automatically assume simply based on color that an object is not a firearm. NSSF is urging all sportsmen, firearm owners and retailers to contact their senators to express opposition to SB 798. Please also take a moment to join the petition.
